Hi all i have just insured my camera gear due to the fact i need cover outside the house.

The company i used is (E and L) had anybody got any views on them as i have 14 days to cancel.

Cancel it, E&L are rubbish, their car cover is a complete waste of time. They only cover cars that have a boot that is seperate from the main car (and that canno't be accessed from the car), so basicaly 90% of cars arn't actually covered, despite them charging you for it.

Also heard stories about difficulties claiming etc.

I had E&L and cancelled it within a few days. I then had Photoguard for a year and now have Glover & Howe.

Hmm.

Just after i hit the buy button i thought i should ask the guys on TP, well here is why..

Try Photoguard thats who I am with and several others I know. You will be asked for the serial numbers and value of camera and lens etc so have them ready.

Supposed to have a good reputation

Just renewed with Aaduki, I was with Photoguard before, but quoted me £100 more for the same cover...

I did exactly the same thing, I asked here and then I read the policy documents when people were talking about the non-existant car cover. Cancelled the day after.

E & L are absolutely cr*p cancel had no end of problems with my animals with them now insure with the NFU

Ok i've sent an email asking to cancel. I have tryed the other companys mentioned here but they seem a lot more expensive than e and l, is this the get what you pay for thing?

I used them for a year and then they more than doubled my policy without me having made a claim...

hmm... I have never even thought about insurance 'til I read this thread.

*off to have a look round*

I'll tell you why i have been looking.
I have a mate who bought a Sigma 50-150mm f2.8 last week, went out on wednesday to take some shots never closed his bag right and guess what.......yes it fell out and he did'nt no where as he had walked miles.

He did do a back track but it was not to be seen.

mmmm, just thinking how would this work with the insurance would they cover you for this?

Tell 'em a different story if they don't.

I have mine with Glover and Howe, they are great at taking my money each year ;) not had to claim yet but the staff are very friendly. I always get round to renewing about a month after the policy expires and they have never quibbled about taking back my no claims or anything like that. so on those grounds they do seem to be pretty good.

There must be an echo in here. Just make sure you do cancel. I had a real run in with them on the phone after they told me my gear wasn't insured in a Range Rover with laminated windows! (very difficult to break)
It would be insured in a 1960 car though! I have a real dislike for this company. They have very misleading terms and conditions, take your money and sit back and wait for the day you 'try' to claim.
In my particular case the guy had no interest in trying to sort the problem out. He made it absolutely clear that they would not refund me my premium. He even admitted to me that 99% of cars arent covered!
If anyone has insurance with this company and you can access the boot via folding seats or central locking is fitted to your car, then its not insured. You have to be able to manually lock the boot and the central locking not open the boot when unlocking the car.
The policy is outdated. Nowadays most cars have 'deadlock'. Which makes it impossible to unlock the doors when smashing a window.
I took out my policy via telephone and they didn't inform me that a brand new Range Rover wouldn't be covered. They simply said that the equipment had to be kept in the boot space at all times.
Blimey 6.30am and I've had a rant already! :D

:agree: Same here - even though there terms suggest a hatchback is covered, indeed the explicitly state that you should use the factory supplied cover, they are not. As Kev has said, the cameras must be in the boot; the boot must not be accessible from the body of the car in any way (folding seats, ski holes) nor can it be opened from the inside of the car. The boot must also be on a separate lock to the main body of the car. Personally, I have never owned a car where this is true.

After taking my policy, I rang up to check that my specific car was covered. They lady on the phone was honest and said pretty much straight away that it was not, but spoke to her supervisor to check. He confirmed it was not and I cancelled the policy there and then. Ended up changing my home contents policy to Hiscox as they looked very comprehensive.

So can someone make a quick list on who I should ring tomorrow to get quotes from please?

Just ring Glover & Howe, they are the least difficult when claiming, they pay out streight away no questions asked (pretty much). They are also cheaper then Photoguard.

I've got mine with AUA

Very good when one is constantly swapping lenses, mind you i've never had to claim so i cannot tell how they would be if and when it actually came to it.

I play golf and have my clubs insured through my house contents policy.

I haven't got around to adding any photography equipment.

John

I've got mine as an all risks extension on the house insurance, have just made a claim for a smashed camera (don't ask......Kids) which they are paying with no problems.

In respect of E&L's car cover, I must point out that I'm not at all impressed with Photoguard's either. If you read through the terms then my hatchback has to be fitted with a full steering wheel lock at all times or the gear isn't covered. Utterly stupid requirement IMO.

Their prices also look good until you add vehicle and EU cover, when they start rocketing.

Just gone with aaduki (renewed on Friday). I was with Photoguard and Aaduki give me more cover and are nearly £150 cheaper per annum. They also changed a clause in the terms to suit my working hours. Obviously have not had to make a claim but have heard very good reports from other posters who have.

Efficient, friendly, better cover and cheaper. What more could I want?

John

Hmm, Glover & Lowe's website seems ridiculously simplistic and just gives you a figure based on very few criteria and I can't see anywhere where where you're covered for is fully explained.

Aaduki, OTOH, appear to be for professional outfits only rather than amateurs.

EDIT: On further inspection I've found the key facts for Aaduki and they only cover theft from an unattended vehicle between 6am and 9pm! This total lack of cover for unattended vehicles (or with huge caveats) is frankly pathetic for dedicated insurance such as this.

That is the key part they have removed for myself. I asked and they have modified the clause (in writing) to 24 hour cover. The example I gave them was covering evening football and stopping for a coffee on the way home. Under the original terms this may not have been covered. Under the new terms it is.

Did it change the cost of the quote by altering to 24 hour cover?

I got the original quote in October last year and for the renewal added employee liability so the amounts had changed but going from memory I do not recall any additional charge for the change to the hours of cover.

John

Yeah I just got a quote, but its showing equipment only and i m looking for liabilty as well.. might have to give them a ring tomorrow!

I have been with Photoguard (new name is JTOnline). Made one claim on my 24-70 2.8 lens after it rolled off a table during a wedding and bounced a few times. It cost £171.00 to fix and the insurance company refunded all my Postage charges (there and back). They do not have an excess attached to their policies, and do not process claims under £100.00. Fast turnaround service. The company that fixed the lens - Fixation, has worked with Photoguard on numerous occasions and told me they would be very surprised if the claim wasn't straightforward and quick - It was!!

Does it work like car insurance? If you claim your premium goes up? How does it work with Camera Insurance?

re photoguard being expensive, for 3.5k worth of kit im paying 139 a year inc car cover, hire cover, 1 million of public liability and 5k worth of accidental cover.

didnt think that was too bad personally..

My Premium is £224.00 for £6,000 cover, Car cover, PL £1m etc. Won't know until renewal in July whether premium will be bumped up or not. To be honest, I wouldn't mind if the premium goes up a bit, so long as the fast turnaround service is there without having to put up a fight as the insurance company tries to find the smallest loophole to get out of paying up. Peace of mind is what its all about. I am happy with mine.:)
