Hellooo everyone...

After some time it is now looking likely that I will be gettin in more work as a Semi-Pro and Dave [DiddyDave] has suggested that it would be a good thing to get my own insurance.

I obviously need it to cover PI, PL and hopefully equiptment too.

So I'm calling out to all the pro's and semi pro's who have insurance to ask....who do you use?! [what does it cover]

I've looked at http://www.aaduki.com/ and theirs would be £282.00 [something] a year...so Its a bit like car insurance I suppose....Just shopping around for the cheapest quote, without scrimping on what it covers me for.

Help and advice much appreciated....Cheers guys!!! :)

Hi D I'm with photoguard for mine £235 (£22.13 a month) and for that I got £3.5K of equipment cover plus PL.

Easy enough to set up online though I did have to list all the serial numbers of all my kit.

Which reminds me, I need to change some of it already!

I pay (something like) £350 through Norwich Union for £10,000 worth of cover, plus £2M PL.

I'm with Glover & Howe (their Amateur policy).

£5,500 cover cost me £190. For me it was important to cover equipment when left in the car boot during the day.

I took a long time to shop around for the right policy and heard nothing but praise for this company.

photoguard
cover the kit
and got public liability over the phone
v good peeps to deal with
but not had to claim yet
that's the real test

Aaduki for me and so far have been very good, not sure what I pay, it keeps going up as I add kit but PL, all my gear, Mac, drives, cards the lot is covered, cover while in the car or van as long as its not between 9pm and 7am I think - dead easy to deal with, I like that :)

Hi i'm with E&L insurance (www.eandl.co uk) Tel. 0874022755. Recommended by a photography magizine. I pay about £17 p/m for a £6000 all risk policy. Check it out.

I'm with photoguard and have my kit covered at home, abroad, in the car etc, plus public liability, all with no excess.

I'm with Imaging Insurance. E&L are nothing but crooks IMO, if you need to understand why take a look at the small print for their 'in car' cover and then search for threads started by me.

Good luck! I've read nothing but nightmares about these cowboys.

£41 a month with Photoguard Pro. Also includes indemnity guard (for the Weddings).

That gives me cover for £15k of camera equipment and some of my PC's/Mac's also :)

I'm with Photoguard as well.

Has anyone had to claim on their Photoguard insurance?

If so, I'd be interested to know about the situation and the outcome of it.

I was told that I only needed PL insurance and not indemnity. I was told indemnity insurance was only really useful for someone providing advisory type services.

Borrowed from an insurance website...

So what is Professional Indemnity insurance?

It’s the kind of insurance that protects your business from financially crippling and often reputation-damaging claims by dissatisfied clients. Because in this everything-by-yesterday world, even the most respectable companies can find themselves in dispute with a client over a mistake.

How will it protect my business?

Professional Indemnity works in a number of ways:

1. It will cover you if you make a mistake in the professional services you have provided that leads to a dispute with a client. If the dispute becomes complicated and nasty, your insurer can defend your claim - right through to the High Court, if necessary. Even if you lose, the policy will still cover you for any damages you then become liable for, subject to the level of cover your business is insured for.

2. The policy will also cover the cost of fixing any mistake on your part, thus avoiding a larger claim being made. Fixing a problem before it becomes an even bigger problem is simple common sense.

3. You are also protected if you lose or damage any clients’ documents in your care or if one of your employees are involved in the theft of a clients’ money.

That's a brief explanation of what it is, but I think the fact that most Pro Tog insurance companies include it as part of the package suggests they think it's an automatic need; defo one to include IMO

I pay £35 a month with Photoguard (Never had to use them and hope I dont ahve to but so far so good)

*Touches wood*

I'm with Photoguard too... mine was about £120 for the year. I obviously went for a bit less cover as a semi-pro, but it was easy enough to use and have peace of mind now!

That's what you think. I take it you didn't read the small print, it's not exactly a fair especially with regards to the laughable "in car cover".

As a matter of interest which photography recommended it and how did they recommend it to you? I know I've thown lots of the leaflets away out the middle of the mags but i've never seen any magazine actually compare insurances.
