I have a decent video camera and also getting more photo gear as the months pass and I have been thinking about doing some weddings. I'm wondering what kind of insurance do i need.

Basically i'm after the names of each type of insurance, I assume I need Public Liability but what do I need if nothing works and there are no pictures/video or if they don't like the outcome and decide they don't want to pay or worse, sue me because i didn't have a product.

Im sure some people out there have had to deal with some unhappy people, how did you deal with it?

Thanks in advance.

an interesting question, and looking forward to seeing the answers:popcorn:

I would imagine you would need a minimum of public liability and indemnity insurance and you need to check the level they cover, but most business type policies will allow you to add on extra cover.

No idea about the rest of the question though!

the two main ones are public liability and professional indemnity.

PL Is what covers you for accidents involving the general public.

PI Is what covers you when you get sued for screwing up.

In both cases read the small print very carefully - but esp. with the PI.

If you have employees you also by law require employers liability insurance - there is an exemption where the only employee is yourself, but its cheap and worth looking at. EL and PL are often sold as a package. The brokers will also usually try to sell you all sorts of income protection stuff - read the small print on that with extra caution as there are usually get outs that in effect mean that the self employed are not covered. BVC (be very careful)

When we took out PL & PI insurance out, PL wasn't a problem but PI was a little more difficult for us. Because we were doing it alongside out regular day jobs, alot of insurers didn't want to know because it was not our full time business.

Can't remember the reasoning behind that, but bare it in mind!

We joined a wedding photographers association, (SWPP I think) and they put us in touch with a company who did take us on. I think this association will also provide you assistance if you get into legal difficulties. However, this may have changed in the 5 years or so since we did it!

best of luck
