Yes
Most of my kit, with a couple of exceptions have been purchased second hand and I don't have receipts for the most part. I may be able to dig up some emails from sellers etc but nothing 'official'.
I had looked at photoguard but they want receipts. Is there an insurer who will cover me on the strength of say dated pictures or physical proof? How does this work, I'm surely not the only one.

phone this guy... stsve at cliik.co.uk his number is on the site.. he will be happy to chat wiht you... if anyone can help then he will I am sure

Very kind of you to reply so quickly. This a pro service, I am but a hobby nerd. I don't want to sound like a curmudgeon in light of the fact that you've offered to help but he uses a premium rate phone line which doesn't endear me to his business......

ha! didnt know about the number.. i spoke to him on a mobile but was over a year ago.. I didnt check first... the rate you pay will be same hobby or pro....X amount of equipment wil be Y amount to insure... photoguard is one of the most expensive.. i was wiht them for a couple of yrs before they hiked there prices.. been to others but from reccomendations on these forums went to cliik ... however not needed to phone for yonks :)

I'm with photoguard, I only had to give them my serial numbers as proof, best bet is to just ring or email various insurers and see what they'll do.

Yeah when you open a policy they normally just ask for serial numbers, but if you claim they will normally then want to see recipts for the proof of purchase.

In the Uk I have cover provided with my house insurance, covers theft, accidental, loss anywhere away from the property and only adds a few pounds to the yearly premium :)

I've been looking at insurance for a while, photo guard and aaduki have been two I've looked. I'm in the same boat as you with lots of second hand equipment. Aaduki gave me a quote at the photography show at the nec in March. Their amateur cover was more then the professional cover, reason they said was pros take care of their equipment better, I think it may be due to some amateurs may try to 'update' their equipment with a claim. I did read on here yesterday that many people completely change manufacturers when they lose all of their equipment. I did ask aaduki many questions at the nec, even revisiting their stand to ask more questions.

Kind of pointless I think, either they accept the serial numbers as proof of purchase or they don't ??? I used to use aaduki (I think) but let the policy lapse. They required pictures of the items which I took next to my photo driving licence, not that I needed to claim. I could go back but thought it worthwhile to ask on here, belt and braces and all that razamatazz.

I've got mine insured through the home insurance at present but the problem is it doesn't cover equipment left in the car, so I have to carry everything or risk it not been insured. It's got to a point where I have quite a large amount so moving to specialist insurance makes sense. Also many home contents insurance doesn't cover any selling of images, even some amateur polices through specialist insurers don't and it could lead to you being uninsured if you claim.

Like you say it's best to ensure you cover all requirements to ensure you are covered. They could be happy to take your money until you need to claim, then say you can't claim as you can't provide you had purchased or owned it.

I am just telling you what most insurance companies I have been with have said, they ask for the serial numbers when setting up the policy but will need receipts when you need to claim, don't shoot the messenger :)

Just check the small print carefully when you set your insurance up.

I'll repeat that in English, thanks for the advice, no offence intended.

I am in a similar position - I currently have my gear on the home insurance as 'all risks' - they require proof that you owned the items, but will accept things like original boxes, manuals, etc for that, in the case of second-hand items, or items that you have had for some time so may no longer have the receipt.

Another insurer woudl accept photographs of the actual items (obviously you need to take these before they are stolen :))

As has already been suggested - check the fine-print before paying fro the policy.

I needed to make a claim via PhotoGuard last year, serial numbers where needed on set up yes, when claiming they required proof of purchase, as one of the items I claimed for was purchased off here I sent them screen grabs of the post and a copy of my bank statement that showed the matching amount of money leaving my account and they accepted that, only advice I can give is insure for replacement cost not what you paid for it, I got stung a bit for that. But a relatively painless claim.
Live and learn about he valuations though.

.

so what would happen in the event of say a house fire , where receipts etc would be lost as well as the items concerned ?

my home insurers (direct line) say that they don't require proof or purchase except on separately notified items (ie those over 5k - and in that case I'd be able to get a statement from the bank showing where I'd spent the money)

I claimed with Photoguard for a second hand 7D when I dropped it. I'd swapped a 60D for the 7D on the forum and I sent them a printed copy of the deal thread so they could see what the value of the camera was. It was accepted along with the serial numbers when I set the policy up and they paid promptly and I've had no problems, or big increases, when I renewed the policy either. I think the only material change in conditions is I've now got a £50 excess on the policy instead of no excess, but if that's the only thing that's changed I'm happy enough.

I would imagine claims in the event of fire are handled differently - thankfully I've never been in the position to need to claim in those circumstances, but did have a burglary which is where I needed to give some evidence that I had owned the items I was claiming for.
