Just had a quote of £133 for £10k of photographic equipment and £1,250 for my laptop

60 days - UK and worldwide - 1 years cover

  • Theft from an unattended vehicle
  • All risks including accidental damage and loss
  • Full and open theft

Any suggestions?

do you have to have receipts for all you take - just in case there is a claim?

Seems extremely competitive to me ... check the full policy wording/exclusions.
Receipts are good but most/many insurers should accept reasonable proof e.g. forum sales transcript + photos, written private receipt etc.

That's a good price! Is that purely for the equipment?

I've used photos for insurance purposes in the past.

Have you read the policy terms and conditions carefully? For instance, cover for theft of items from an unattended car is often caveated with clauses such as 'All items must be stored out of sight in a securely locked compartment such as the vehicle boot or lockable glove compartment' and 'This cover does not extend to items stored in any vehicle overnight', etc. The small print of the 'terms and conditions' often sorts the sheep from the goats when deciding just what cover you are actually getting for your hard-earned money.

Seems reasonable for the photo equipment presumably that includes the Laptop.
Is that a specialist insurer or on your household policy?

I'm using http://www.imaginginsurance.co.uk they're a specialist insurer, home insurance didn't cover all my gear. Get world wide cover, car cover and its old for new policy. Unfortunately unless you've used these insurers in anger, ie tried to make a claim, all you can really say is they're good at taking your money. There's lots of different companies, photoguard yours etc, all have had mixed reviews when it comes to paying out, all I can advise you is when getting a quote for your gear, price the value for a new replacement, not the actual value of your gear now.

its old for new policy
Surely you mean new for old ... or do they really send you a 5D MkII when your shiny new 5D MkIV is stolen? :-)
all I can advise you is when getting a quote for your gear, price the value for a new replacement, not the actual value of your gear now.
Thats important ... its not the cost when you bought it thats important, its what it would cost to replace it.

Just did mine recently and due to it being a new for old policy I had to get £25k cover!

The biggest hit was the 400mm VR, under £5k for what looks like a brand new lens but insured for over £10k to replace with a new one!

Sure you had a 600mm Bill? In which case you'd need £10k cover for the lens alone to cover you for a new replacement!

It's amazing how it adds up, 6 yr old laptop = £2.5k, filters well over £1k, tripods and heads over £2.5k. If you want to scare yourself add up the new price for everything you have, it was an intersting exercise for me!
