Hi folks,

I'm off to Kenya in a couple of weeks and I'm looking at camera insurance for my kit while I'm away. Photoguard seems pretty good and I'm thinking of using them. However, has anyone any experience of using these guys (or similar in that matter) where your kit is second-hand? I've got a used 300mm f2.8 and 1D Mk4 I'll be taking with me, so I don't have proof of ownership/receipts - something seemingly needed for any claims.

Has anyone been in a situation where they've needed to claim for used kit?

Cheers,
Mark

I produced my forum agreement to buy and the box as proof for an insurance claim. It was no issue at all.

It was with Hiscox. I did have to file a complaint as the independent loss adjuster they used based his prices on a Hong Kong based retailer. The cheeky b****r. I told them I want full UK main dealer price for my Nikon 24-70 and the cheeky b****r challenged me to buy it online. One phone call to hiscox direct and they were willing to pay uk prices.

If anyone's interested, I think I'm probably OK with my home contents insurance through Nationwide. Just been checking it with them and I'm covered for all my kit out of the country and since nothing is worth over £4K, I don't need to individually specify items. Asked them about 2nd hand stuff and they're happy that if I provide photographs of the kit and serial numbers that should be OK for any claim.

So I'll probably do that, and take photos of them next to my driving licence or something as proof they're mine, as well as print out details of the classified threads on here where I've bought the kit from people.

If I hear back from Photoguard, I'll report back.

For anyone interested, Photoguard said they'd need:

· Online invoices
· Bank statements clearly showing purchase details
· Packaging and literature
· Photographs (not on their own)
· A document from a photo equipment retailer stating what the item is, the value of the item, who the item belongs to and a date on which this information was relevant. This document will also need to contain the retailer’s details.

For a claim, but in the absence of these "bank records showing payments and supporting correspondence between yourself and the sellers would be suitable".

I've got adequate cover from my home insurance, but if I hadn't then I'd have probably taken this out, as it looks like it'd give me the cover I needed.
