Insufficient photo resolution- via zenfolio

I might be going over old ground with this and someone might have already had this issue and had it answered on here so apologies if this is the case but here goes.....

I use zenfolio for my clients photos and have recently had a client make enquiries about large framed prints and canvasses. Therefore I have linked my relative photos with such items from 3rd party vendors as the site allow you to do. But to my horror I am getting "insufficient photo resolution for this product" and quite a few of the larger prints (ironically the products and items that my client might be interested in).

I have personally ordered larger prints (36 x 24) before directly from said vendors (photobox for one) and have been happy with the resolution.

The camera behind the images is a 12mp D3 and the photos have been ran through LR with minimal cropping.

Is it just zenfolio being picky?
Is my camera not of a high enough resolution (I hope not!)?
Should I be doing something else with the photos to enable such sized printing?

Any help would be appreciated, thanks

I assume you're uploading hi-res images to Zenfolio?

I've only ever had that message when the upload was a lo-res file.

Are you printing through one vision? For each product it will say the minimum resolution required, normally 300ppi. So Your 36x24 will need to be 10800x7200px for example, hence the warning.

I did have a load of prints selected via photobox, but I believe I had added larger framed prints by one vision.

However what I can't understand is that the warning isn't a warning, I've logged in as a client and it simply won't allow me to add it to the cart?

So it's stopping a customer from essentially wasting their money? Sounds like it's doing a good job to me.

It's a fail safe, you need to upload a large enough image to be able to offer such large products. I can't say I have ever noticed a way to turn it off, but I've not looked.....

yes but if you go direct to vendors they will accept the order?!? I have placed orders directly through photobox for example (fair enough one vision is different) for items and they have printed them and I've been perfectly happy with the product..... it seems to be zenfolio stopping the order needlessly in many cases.

Based on a bit more research following a response from zenfolio and yourself Bass_junkie83 (thanks) it does seem that in some cases I will need to improve my resolution.

I only have 12mp to work with (which isn't bad is it?) what is a smart way of improving that?..... is software such as perfect resize any good?

12mp files from a D3 are more than sufficient as long as you save them at 300dpi, photoshop works out the algorithms to resize probably the same way as perfect resize.

Thanks for the snapalot- I had been exporting out of LR at 240dpi, would that make that much of a difference?

just tested one I exported at 300dpi, pretty much the same result through the one vision vendor- even with 36 x 24

yes 4000 x 3000 give or take pixels per photo, 6mb+ files etc.

Are you limiting the size of the image when exporting from LR?

Seems you are only getting half capacity from your 12mp camera, unrestricted at 300 dpi should work.

I have just tested another, I exported the file with the same W x H pixels amount based on it being 300dpi for a 36 x 24 photo and the vendors allow this.

Surely the resolution the camera knocks out in the first place is the best resolution because that's the photos original format?

I am extremely confused

Have you unticked the box in the LR export window that says do not enlarge?

How might I be getting half capacity from my camera, is that a setting/config that has passed me by?

I think its just automated message from Zenfolio, but it isn't correct, the labs are happy with a hi res photo and for some reason Zenfolio isn't.

I think the solution is to change the approval settings in Selling to 'I will approve orders before sending for fulfillment'

If you have an image from the camera that is 12mp and, your finished image is only 6mp, something is reducing the image to 6mp.

Ignore it. Approve all orders personally. Even better, self fulfill all orders. Impossible to turn off auto correct with photobox through zebfolio, messed some low key prints up big time. Also less fees wjhen you self fulfill
