Installing Win7 upgrade Onto New HD

I intend to get a new internal hd as the current system disc 250gb is not quite enough for my needs. I currently run Win 7.

Originally I had Vista then bought the Win 7 upgrade when it was released and have used Win 7 ever since. If I install system onto new HD will I need to install original Vista first then install the Win 7 Upgrade? Lastly do I need to de-register Win 7 before starting.

I still have both Vista and Win 7 on dvd's, both are legit by the way bought from store.
 
Never really thought about that, is it easy enough for a desktop pc, I assume you put new hd in place then do the business? What software would I need ...preferably free;)

paragon hard disk manager is good and they offer a free version.
others include Easus (also free) Win 7 can also create a system image with a recover disk but I have never used this to clone a disk.

If you are happy with your current HDD & setup cloning is the way to go

OK. Your Windows 7 upgrade is designed to stop you doing a "clean" (i.e. bare metal) install. You can install by booting off it, wipe your disk and install, but it's not going to activate as it will not accept your upgrade serial on a clean install - this is by design - you've not paid for a "full" install.
The "approved" method is to install Vista, then do an upgrade.
This is the legal, PITA method.

If you were to visit http://winsupersite.com/article/windows-7/clean-install-windows-7-with-upgrade-media-128512 and check out the "Method #2: Registry Hack" bit you will find an unsupported but completely easy and working method to activate the clean install however.

Views definitely not those of my employer, YMMV, etc but it does work ;-)
 
Thanks for the link, as I have paid for versions both with product keys I think I'll probably go down the double install route onto the new HD, I don't think I'll bother cloning the old drive as it is full of junk anyway, a clean setup for a wee while will be nice.
 
Best of luck with that!!

1/2 a day at least trying to install each OS then the hastle of Activating them, then reinstalling your Programmes if you`re still able to.

Cloning takes about a Hour plus the short time used to fit new drive and afterwards removing old drive.
