Yes
I didn't think that Adobe supplied actual discs any more but if they do this will do the job for you. We use them at work with both Macs and PCs.

Download the stand alone trial version of LR6 buy the cd and use the key on the cd to activate lightroom.

Have you tried downloading the 'stand alone' trial version, I found it impossible, it comes as part of CC.
I want nothing to do with CC.

Install the trial version of LRCC then activate it using the reg key on your boxed product. According to this page - HERE - it will activate as the standalone LR6.

Hi, just a piece of advice please.

I have a MacBook Pro that has doesn't have a DVD drive built in.

I know I could download it from from Adobe or Amazon, but I like something in a 'box' and I want a stand-alone item, with no connection to CC.

Will this do what I require please.

Samsung SE-208DB/TSBS External USB 2.0 DVDRW.

With specifics to the DVD - yes that will work fine. I've bought one similar as a present and works a treat.

I use a dvd drive a fair bit so when I bought my MBP I bought the apple drive with it, a decision I've not regretted so far.
