I can see now the below is showing incorrectly on a pc. Not sure why but this was copied and pasted using an iphone. One for the mods to resolve.

“Nobody tells this to people who are beginners. I wish someone had told me. All of us who do creative work, we get into it because we have good taste. But there is this gap. For the first couple years you make stuff, it’s just not that good. It’s trying to be good, it has potential, but it’s not. But your taste, the thing that got you into the game, is still killer. And your taste is why your work disappoints you. A lot of people never get past this phase; they quit. Most people I know who do interesting, creative work went through years of this. We know our work doesn’t have this special thing that we want it to have. We all go through this. And if you are just starting out or you are still in this phase, you gotta know that it’s normal and the most important thing you can do is do a lot of work. Put yourself on a deadline so that every week you finish one piece. It’s only by going through a volume of work that you will close that gap, and your work will be as good as your ambitions. And I took longer to figure out how to do this than anyone I’ve ever met.”“It’s gonna take a while. It’s normal to take a while. You just gotta fight your way through.”

What is It&rsquo?

I hate to be the voice of dissent here, but:

All of us who do creative work, we get into it because we have good taste.

I absolutely and totally and utterly disagree with this. It's such a ludicrously unsubstantiated statement that I can't even bring myself to read the rest of it if this is how it starts.

Thanks for that, I felt like selling up today but I think I'll struggle on

+1. The It&rsquo crap didn't help either.

Not sure what everyone is going on about as it reads perfectly on my iPhone. Maybe a HTML error / script error on the site.

Either way it's a quote that I found on the net to give some inspiration to people in all arts, not just photography. Not sure on the post about creativity being the opposite of good taste ? Unless you have something nice to say don't say it at all, otherwise back it up with something more substantial.

OK

Creativity is about breaking out from the norms - otherwise it's not creative, it's repetition. Breakthroughs in the arts are considered to be in bad taste at first. In time the avant garde always becomes acceptable.

If you are making 'art' that satisfies the currently acceptable definition of 'good taste' it's probably bad art.

That better? :D

What the he** are you going on about, after the first ten words (proper words) I gave up, is it English

I think the Helsinki Bus station theory said it so much better. I can see what Ira Glass is saying, unfortunately the words are getting in the way.

It looks English to me. Maybe you have a pc not displaying it correctly. I have previously said it looks perfect on my iPhone so maybe there is a script error on pasting text. Try google the authors name for the same quote. Thousands of people love the quote and have been inspired by it, but everyone has an opinion which I was to expect. Roughly translated it tells you not to give up your dreams of becoming excellent in whatever you do, don't fall at hurdles and think you can't do something.

its not proper english to me either. Perhaps your iphone tried to self-censor?

Another well known 'quotation'........you can't please all of the people all of the time.

I understood your reasoning:thumbs:

Many thanks, I thought I was going crazy but I was inspired by it hugely. My brother saw it last week and has decided to re-start his drawing to become an artist.

Apologies for anyone that this has upset or do not agree.
