Morning*

I have nothing to get up to apart from work on a saturday. Nothing at all. Lie in every day for the next 10 weeks. (apart from saturdays). Jelous?

And I am retired (very early) done my stint, so do not have to work ever again, :D

Was a welder in the oil platform/topside construction industry, awful job, gave it all up at 49, became a house husband and managed on Mrs G's wage alone, placing my health before money, same occupation finished my father off.

Any old excuse! lol ;)

On a serious note, I know nothing of the occupation so perhaps you can enlighten us to the dangers? I thought welding was a relatively safe job...

I have of course a wee welding set & compressor in my garage :)

...and I`m knackered after a serious road accident which caused nerve damage to my neck.I spend all night just bimbling through t'thowd t'tinternet swopping between the three forums I am a member of.....One of which I admin on and have the rare fun of playing the game of bin the spammer....until the zappy pills kick in and I wake up about half hour after Ive gone to sleep LOL

There are lots of dangers/health risks involved depending on what welding process is being used some are safer than others. Various gases are used, argon for instance although an inert gas can have a harmful effect if used for long periods.Various electrodes give off harmful gasses The more exotic metals, cunifer for instance, an alloy of copper/nickel and ferrous metal is known to give off harmful fumes. Air fed masks were supplied but it was not always practical to wear such cumbersome protective clothing most times and at the same time employees were under pressure to "get the job done" or be out of a job if you know what I mean.
The dust generated in the workplace did your lungs no favours, again masks were supplied but it was not practical to wear one at all time and no effort was made at the sites I worked at to keep the dust down.
Noise was also an issue with pneumatic tools, employees were under pressure to "get the job done" again and would take the silencers off the grinders to prevent them freezing up and they would make a hell of a noise.
There was also the danger of working at great heights and of debris falling from above you.
There was occasions when the weld joint was preheated to a very high temperature in confined spaces which was not very healthy, and in contrast you could be outside on nightshift working in sub zero temperatures in a stationary position freezing your whatsits off.
Eye injuries were common from dust and grinding sparks, and particularly unpleasant was "arc eye", when the surface of the eye was burnt from being exposed to the welders arc, like sunburn and the eye would shed skin, it felt like having sand in your eye and you could not see or sleep, it only took an accidental glance at the arc.
No it was not a healthy occupation, pleased to be out of it.

Did you have to post something this complex at this late time of the night? Please don't do that again ... I live on one brain cell, and I try to shut it down when past my bed time (9:30pm)!

Can i join the club :) i work on pc at night from home so im here often!

Wow. That sounds awful and i can well appreciate why you got out of it. My only welding experience was years ago with a now defunct company. They made office furniture and chairs but installed some really good ventilation equipment.

hehe. That reminded me of one of my favourite put-downs: If you had a brain cell it would be lonely. I don't get the chance to use it very often these days but thought i'd share it for those who might ;)

I heard "thick as a whale omelette" recently, used to describe the sexual expertise of a chap's terrier.

lol. Never heard that one before.

Another one I heard was: if you had 2 brain cells it would be one too many!

Why would I need two brain cells? One does me fine!

It's almost my bed time ... carshing to bed by 9:30 ~ 10:00pm!

I have only 15 minutes left before I retire, I was not popular at 2.30 am as I woke up Mrs G despite sliding into bed ever so carefully so I am under orders to be in bed by 12 or she transfers to the huffy bed:D

huffy bed eh? lol well mine has gone to bed now... so what's the topic of the moment - huffy wifes and beds?

Mine is off to bed too. I'm thinking about a Counterstrike session. Geek or what. I'm definitely having sleeping issues.

Sorry I can't join in tonight must go..................:exit:

I think I've figured out what keeps me awake so often, it's all the sugar I consume

I can't! I have a serious sugar addiction ... for example, I'd take anything over 8 teaspoons in a cup of tea!

Oh yes, you're all with us now but at 4 in the morning where are all the hardcore insomniacs?????????????

Eh, I used to stay up til 6 or 7am every day but not anymore... person I stayed talking with til then no longer comes on so... I have gone to the other side, lol.

Does anyone else notice that theres something really peaceful about this time of night?

Yeah, but because I can surf with much greater productivity and less distractions I actually get bored much quicker.... or is that just me?

I'm usually too tired to be productive, and when i get bored i will just go to sleep.
