Can anyone identify this insect? I seem to have introduced a plague of them when I put some logs in my studio. I find them dead and alive and they're quite dramatic when flying. I just need to know if they're harmless. 20170629_164921.jpg

My knowledge of insects is not good - there are too many species for me to learn. My immediate thought on seeing your shot was wood wasp. This would fit in with them arriving with a load of logs.

If I'm correct then it is harmless; wood wasps lay their eggs in trees. However, some look pretty fearsome.

I'm sure someone with more knowledge than me will be along soon.

Just googled that and it does look like it to be honest.

I'm glad to read that they're harmless but it's a bit freaky when it flies around. I run a family portrait studio and don't really want kids to see them.

You could say smile or the wood wasp will get you.

My partner gets them in his house from the logs for the stove. The first time we found one was quite scary till we found out what it was. They're actually sawflies, though they are related to the wasp family, and harmless. They can be a bit of a pest in trees as they bore a bit like woodworm, but they're no threat to house timbers as it's 'dead' and too dry for them. It's only the last couple of summers we've been finding them.
