I'm in the process of printing out several copies of my CV as I'm off to a job fair tomorrow at the NEC. All of a sudden it started printing the first page green instead of black but for some reason the second page was fine. I've changed all sorts of settings on the printer and replaced the black cratridge to no avail. In the end I changed the colour tank and it's fixed the problem. I don't see why the colour tank should make a difference to plain old black printing on white paper. Is this an indication that something is very wrong with my printer? It probably makes no difference but to save anyone asking it's a Canon i455.

Have you run a head cleaning cycle? I have an epson so I'm just guessing really.
Just read your post properly now, Maybe you should have printed B&W from the driver maybe and you printed colour which would have mixed the colours to B&W and one of the colours might have been out causing the print to be green instead of black.

Pinters do use colour inks to print black, not just the black ink, it sounds odd I know but it happens!
