Infra Red Fuji S5

Hi,
I'm novice in IR .. and really sorry for this basic question.
If i use this camera, can i take a normal colour picture.
Cheers

The only problem with these is that you can't just walk in off the street and buy one (delivery time notwithstanding), Fuji require you to submit documentation proving that you have a legitimate professional use to own such a camera, this normally means that the buyer/end user needs to be employed in the law enforcement or medical profession.

With the addition of a filter, yes.

Many thanks Graham. Appreciate your time spent for replying.

just for my :bonk: can you please guide me where I can get materials to read about this subject. Searched in Google and going round and round.

Cheers and have a nice day.

There's not really a lot online about this camera, it's a specialied piece of kit that was never made available to the general public, so most "reviews" are based on Fuji's press release.

Umm.. Why? I think anyone can send their cameras to a conversion shop for UV/IR modification? I've been considering getting my old 40D modded like that.

Puzzled! :geek:

Damn, my plans for world domination have been scuppered....

Ummm ok! So does the Fuji built-for-UV-IR provide better sensitivity etc than a conversion on a normal DSLR?

For me ...my worries...

that I cannot take a normal colour picture with this and need a £100 quid worth of filter in front my lens :gag:

Now I that there would be a sensitviy benefit because you are no longer filtering for colour, But interestingly the ISO range is the same as the colour camera,

Another worry is that the Metering system may not be sensitve to UV and IR so it may well overexspose,

Stuart

It makes no difference, unless you can pass the vetting proccedure then they won't sell you the camera in the first place.

Are you sure that's still true? Cos I, err, just ordered one.

It's gone on back order because they have sold all their stock today but there has been no mention of vetting. Except for checking I had £400 I didn't need :D

For the sake of knowledge, can i use this camera to take a normal colour picture

The Product Features given in the OP link gives you the info
"The camera can be used for conventional daylight photography by adding an optional UVIR cut filter to the lens. And with Fujifilm's Post Capture Face Detection. After capture faces are automatically zoomed in during playback to confirm focus and exposure of up to 10 faces per image. Color quality is dependant on the brand of UVIR cut filter used."

And here is a filter on ebay around £55 http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Marumi-72mm-UV-IR-CUT-Filter-made-in-Japan-(FH5)-%3dIN-UK_W0QQitemZ170529771144QQcmdZViewItem?rvr_id=136802032165&rvr_id=136802032165&cguid=837bc0211280a0aad1f4e7d4ff3ce67e

Yes, it's still true. You may well have ordered one but you won't receive it until you have completed and returned the End User Qualification form and your purchase has been appproved by Fuji - which it won't be unless you are in the law enforcement or medical profession and can demonstrate a legitimate reason to own one.

They flog em at the Fuji shop also. Only they charge £800!

Aw that's a shame. Unless they count "because I want one" as a legitimate reason :D

Oh well. Can't help thinking Calumet have set themselves up for some grief by not mentioning this on their site.

Just had an email from Calumet with regard to ordering one of these....

Graham

When ordering the Fuji IS Pro Camera we require you to fill out the form
attached and scan and email / or fax this to me at Calumet. This is due
to the Fuji Infra Red Pro camera being a very high risk item.

Once all paperwork is approved by Fuji, the camera will be despatched to
you.

Please allow 1-2 weeks for the Camera to be dispatched.

Kind regards

Kim

Hi Kim, could you explain why it is a "very high risk item"? Thanks, Graham

Graham These cameras are used by the MOD for specialist military use. When consumers and companies outside the military are purchasing this camera it is a legal requirement that Fuji obtain all details of who the customer is and what they intend to use the camera for. Kind regards Kim

So just fill in the form and say that you photograph the Aurora Borealis in Norway or something. It's great for that :)

I'd have ordered one if I was a Nikon glass collector..

'k. Looks like "because I want one" is a good enough reason.

IS-Pro is on charge right now........

Now, that is interesting, get snapping and report back, so I can decide whether to stick an order in before I spend the money on something more frivolous - like the gas bill

:)

Actually the whole process was....

  1. Try to place a web order
  2. Call them up because website doesn't work
  3. Call to find out why you haven't had any contact
  4. Fill out a form
  5. Email back and forth a few times
  6. Ask why you haven't had the camera and be told that they haven't received an email they actually replied to
  7. Email again to chase
  8. Get no response
  9. Answer the door at random and find it's DHL with the camera...

I wasn't planning to buy it from Calumet anyway....:D

Perhaps it's just me but I can't see anything special in those colour photos. Then again I'm not sure the photographer is getting the best out of it by using it on a cloudy day. Anyone who shoots IR film knows that you get the best results when the sun is out.

Best results, yes, but as the guy points out, this is the UK...
