hi all im currently looking to buy either the old sigma 100-300 or the 120-300 dg ex os hsm, but can anyone give some info on the lenses and or pics.i know theres a big price gap between the 2 lenses so im trying to figure out which would suit my needs more.
i know the 100-300 is an f4 with excellent optics, and the 120-300 is f2.8 proberly the same if not better. i like wildlife so i figured the 2.8 would be better due to the 2x converter?
any info would be great

regards
paul.

I changed from a Sigma 150-500 which I found to be an excellent birding lens to the 120-300 which I use with a 2X. The only drawback to the new kit is it's a lot heavier, but you get used to it, and it produces some excellent shots.

I was lucky enough to use the 120-300 for a day last year to shoot a local rugby match. It's a bit on the heavy side but I loved it, cracking lens.

120mm f/3.5

300mm f/3.5

Not tried the 120-300mm but the Sigma 100-300mm f4 is superb on it's own and pretty damned good with the Sigma 1.4x. Obviously the 120-300mm is better (considering it's 3 times the price) and the OS should be handy but for the money the 100-300mm can't be beaten imo.

When does the new version come out? I understand that it is a bit special...I also think its a bit more expensive than its predecessor.

If moon shots make comparison easier, here is an example at 100% from my 7D, 120-300/2.8 OS and Kenko 1.4X Pro 300 DG teleconverter.

It's already late. My understanding is that optics are the same, but build quality/reliability and finish should be improved and there is the USB dock (cost option) which will allow end user firmware upgrades and customisation of the lens, at a price.

I didn't realise there was a new 1 comming out as well.my boss used to have the old version 100-300,but now has the nikon 200-400 but still recomends the old version as optics are brilliant. Is there much difference in the new 120-300.i did hear they had os problems and they where updating it.
