To be more exact, It's on my Wish list(my cheap one :P) and my Fiance said i can have pick a lens upto £1000 for This Christmas and Birthday (She likes to be organised).
Anyway, im just looking for any good or bad experiences with said lens.
If you use a Tc,which one(s) as im considering getting a 1.4 to get a little longer focal length.

John

The 300 f4 is a good lens fairly light and easy to hand hold, with a 1.4 converter you lose a stop of light but the resulting pics are almost indistinguishable from using the prime lens on its own but with the extra pull of 420mm. Focusing may be a tad slower but not by much.
You would not be disappointed by this pair.
I got both lenses from Kerso

Strangely enough my family also bought me a lens for last christmas and birthday, wanted it for wildlife mainly birds.
Considered th3 300mm f/4, but in the end went for the extra length and got the 400mm f/5.6.

Most of the time I would need the extra length and didn't want to have the hassle and extra cost of the TC with the loss in image quality too. No IS admittedly, but its fine in good light supported on a bean bag, monopod or tripod. for birds in flight, shake becomes less of an issue with the necessary high shutter speeds. The 300mm effectively becomes a f5.6 anyway when the TC is used and the AF speed also slows as well.

Not sure what you want it for, but maybe another option to consider or even the 100-400 zoom

Hi Luke

The 300 F4 IS is a cracker of a lens and works well with a 1.4TC, as has been said, you do loose a stop - this is only a problem when the light is a bit poor and I've heard the AF can be a little slower.

The MK III TC is supposed to be an improvement with the AF system and the IQ.

Hi Johm

Doubt that many here will diss this lens. 156 review are here:

Basically, you get exactly what you expect: excellent optics, lightweight, good with x1.4 tcs and the resale value is excellent. If you want this fl and do not want to spend mega-money on the 2.8is this takes a LOT of beating.

Might add that many like the Siggy 120-300f2.8 which has pros and cons and which you can get used for just over 1k.

Regards

Cheers for the Info guy's, I've settled on this Lens. i originally wanted a 100-400 L lens, but when i tried one out,i wasnt pleased with the quality it gave me. it might have been a bad copy,as i tested it in Jessops :S which might be the reason why. To say the least, its put me off the lens. Which is a shame :(

What do you plan to shoot?

I've thought of selling mine because it's rarely used - superb lens though.
