Yes
This isn't new, but someone tweeted this link again the the day and so I thought I'd bring up the topic of influential photographers.

I have a few favourites on the list. Henri Cartier-Bresson and Ansel Adams to name two, but my all time influence is Don McCullin.

Vivian Maier, Andre Kertesz, Sebastio Salgado

HCB,Eugene Smith, Sebastio Salgado, Don McCullin,Philip Jones Giffiths Mary Ellen Marks, plus the others that will come mind :)

Perhaps not influential, but one must give credit to those photographers who give free tutorials online e,g on youtbe. I know they may have books/DVDs to sell, get paid by sponsors, used as a marketing tool for their business, but for example, Gavin Hoey, Bryan Peterson...etc have made some great vids to help anyone wanting to learn some techniques and basics so they are able to develop in their photography skills.

Tricky to evaluate her in an 'all time' list of influential photographers as she was a complete unknown less than five years ago.

Fair point in terms of wider influence, more included by me as a personal influence.

I can't believe that nobody has mentioned perhaps THE most important, influential and groundbreaking of all

William Henry fox talbot

Nicephore nepice

Louis daguerre

John herschel
Without these pioneers photography and indeed modern imaging may never have happened the way it did

I would love to say that there were famous photographers that have influenced me but I can't say that there are. I have viewed alot of don McMullen's post war work which I like but I am more influenced by various shots on Flickr, TP and pistonheads. Which I spend a lot of time viewing.

There's a lot of different 'famous' photographers work that I like, but I don't really think I see many of them as influential to myself. I gain more inspiration from looking at people's work on flickr etc.

The photographers we were told to look at at uni were people like Robert Mapplethorpe....lol

I don't think we should confuse famous and influential. Famous just means popular. Cheryl Cole is famous, but she is never going to be an influential musician or singer.

Crash Taylor is famous in wedding photography, but again not an influential photographer. I doubt very many modern photographers could be called influential. (in my opinion anyway)

Hence my post stating the pioneers

That is so true..

I suppose we are at the point of diminishing returns, nobody can have the same impact/influence or be as genre defining as the true pioneers, its all been done before.
I'm thinking that the main qualification required to be held in such high regard these days is to be dead.....not exclusively just yet though.

far to sensible for round here

I'm still quite a new start when it comes to photography, 2years and counting. So the two people who have inspired and influenced me are both specialised in night photography, Troy Paiva and 'The Flying monk' John Maher.

John lives in the western isles where I do and is actually quite famous for some completely unrelated to photography! He is the drummer in the band The Buzzcocks!

Both of these people along with previously mention online tutorial people e.g. Gavin Hoey, DigitalRev and Jared Polin I think to be very influential in their own right in this age.

I have none, I still take the same crap I did 50 years ago, and ride the same motorcycles, sad I know. And then I came across the name of Faye Godwin, oh dear. I still have books of hers that started me on destroying 6X6 sheets of BXW papers. If I only could capture what she did I'd, well I have yet another drink to her. But in spite of that I'll still continue my 50+ rubbish files (now) a week and riding old(ish) motorcycles. Progress? it's overrated.

I'm quite interested at the moment on how people use their leaisure time, and those moments captured, so Txema Salvans and Jocelyn Bain Hogg spring to mind.

Anyone know of any similar?

I think I have probably been influenced much more by people round here, people i have worked with or just been out shooting with, than any 'famous' photographers. I do like looking at their work, but maybe because I am a 'practical' learner, I find my stuff has been influenced by photographers much closer to home [and lets face it, I am not going to be getting any lessons from Ansel Adams any time soon, I hope  ]

Still, happy to raise a paw for Crash Taylor :D

Was looking up Faye Godwin and came across a picture of here's with a buffalo on a road, with apparently british cars (i spotted a granada and a jag).

anybody know the story behind this or where it was taken?

Just realised that the photographer who has influenced me the most was my dear old Dad. He used to be a pro (mainly product and advertising, along with some press photography) back in the '50s and '60s, giving it up in order to earn more money to support a growing family. Showed me how to use apertures and shutter speeds to get the effects I wanted and explained that composition was (for the amateur) a matter of choice for the photographer.

I hope that I myself have helped a few budding photographers, both here and in the real world. I'm always happy to offer my opinion on kit I've used and owned as well as my opinion on photos, although I rarely venture into the crit area - IMO, many people just want to hear that their photo is perfect rather than get honest critique on it.

the people on this site who seem to give up a big chunk of their time helping all of us get better and consign auto mode to the trash can!

there are plenty of "famous" photographers but none have influenced me in anyway shape or form. The only influence I've had is to better myself.

Here's more that inspire me. Most of this is documentary or fashion..

Alec Soth
Seba Kurtis
Donovan Wylie
Julian Germain
Candida Hoffer
Tim Walker
Nadav Kander
William Eggleston
Joel Meyerowitz
Paulo Roversi

I'll post up some other genres later.

Could that not be seen as a bad thing sometimes? After all.. all the best artists are influenced by someone. People think it's somehow bad, or a sign of weakness to be influenced by others, but if you think about it, if there was no Jimmy Hendrix, there'd be no Lenny Kravitz; no Queen, there'd be no Muse. I'll readiloy admit to being influenced by all of the above. Besides.. I'm fairly certain they have influenced you, but you just don't realise it.
