Infared

Hi Everyone, Has anybody used any infared filters on there canon 40d's yet ? if so, which gave the best results ? thankyou.

It's not the camera but the lens you need to think about for IR photography m8. The kit lens is a no go but many others are fine.

Hi Steep, I've some L grade lenses so is it just the filters I need ?

You'll probably find the Hoya R72 will be the best one to use. It seems to be by far the most popular. Personally I use a Wratten 87c but you will be looking at 5~15min exposure times at iso400 f8 on a bright sunny day with one of those.

Some L lenses produce hotspots others dont, I use a 17-40 and have never noticed any hotspot although some users have had trouble with that lens before.

The camera does have an affect on the capability of doing IR photography, or to be more precise its the efficiency of the sensor's hot mirror. Some cameras (such as the D40X) have a very efficient hotmirror which results in exposures of over 5 minutes. Other cameras are much more suitable for IR, needing only seconds of exposure.

I stand corrected, I'd totally foregotten about the filter over the sensor, which will in some models give very long exposure times. My 30d is affected in this way.
