My telephoto is about to give up the ghost, and I'm in the market for a new(er) telephoto... I saw an ad for this guy in a magazine the piqued my interest. I was wondering of any here owned one of these. I'd like some honest opinions about them.

I'm also debating whether or not to go with a f/2.8 lens then put a teleconverter on it to get the extra length for those particularly close shots.

I own one and I'm pretty critical of lenses and often abit too harsh over the years getting rid of many a good lens based on something fairly trivial at times!

i think it is outstanding and wouldnt be surprised if it wiped the floor with the 70-300VR or Canon 70-300IS.

The stabiliser really is incredible.

The guy in the above link seems blown away by the VC almost as much as I was

It is possible to get sharp images @300MM at 1/30th of a second.

Optically it is sharp across the frame over the entire focal range and TACK sharp stopped down by 1

Thats an old wordpress site I used to use. Literally all of the shots on that of the birds, flowers, cars and butterflies was taken with the tamron and as you can see the bokeh is wonderful for a variable aperture lens!!

I managed to hand hold mine down to 1/15th and still get a sharp shot!
 
You must have very steady hands Ian. :-)
