Indicators- Really!

One thing that annoys me is seeing the 'double brake'

Car joining the carriageway notices at the last minute that there is a car on the near lane, and brakes to try and get behind the car.

Meanwhile the car on the motorway seeing a car trying to join in front, decides to slow down to let the car joining the carriageway.

Net result both cars come to a standstill!

Moan over, back to making dinner!

What does annoy me is joining the motorway behind a driver who is doing 30 mph or god forbid even stopping on the slip road waiting for a gap, honestly it does happen.

Steve

It really does !! There is a short slip road near us that is accessed via a circular road from under a bridge, and many a time I come around the bend and find someone treating it as a junction and sat there looking right waiting for a gap instead of moving into the slip and using their interior or side mirror !! The danger is that some tool might come flying around and ram straight into the back off me!!

Yep!!! It is not really a complaint more an irritation.

It is done both as courtesy and as a wake up call to the odd driver who has not noticed that traffic wishes to merge, rather than have to come to a standstill because some numpty cannot be bothered to anticipate and pull over into the next lane.
Much like my dad, who believes that he should not have to change lane, it is up to the merging car to slow down:nuts:
Thankfully he is no longer driving.

I would rather get irritated when many drivers fail to indicate.

I always move across a lane when approaching a slip road were possible I believe it makes joining the motorway easier. Whilst I realise it is not legally required I find it part of motorway driving etiquette.

Motorway driving would be a whole lot easier and safer if everyone did this.

Steve I do exactly the same. But to your second point what is a car on the slip road meant to do if there isn't a gap they can pull into? Unlikely I know but is possible.

When I went on an advanced Police training course (on my motorbike) they advised to always move into the outer lane when there was a slip road joining the motorway,.

if i did this for most of the motorway driving that i do , i would be commiting an offence

They should be able to read the traffic and adjust there speed accordingly. unless of course there is a complete standstill on the motorway.

or they could always use their indicators!

Which may mean that they need to stop and await a gap, which was exactly my point.

It happens on a regular basis at Junction 12 City bound on the M4 usually between 7.30 and 8am

I always do the same wherever possible, or pre-empting someone wanting to overtake another vehicle and moving over in good time to allow them to do so.

I seem to get a lot of these people when leaving the M25 to join the A127, they think it perfectly ok to indicate they are going to pull out but continue to the end of the slip road, then try and join at 30mph. Worst ones are those that will actually slow down on the slip road for no reason. They then proceed to drive at 40 mph with traffic on the main road coming up behind at 60-70mph. As they've just left a motorway, I'm always left wondering what sort of speed they had been travelling at on there.

From later on in the piece
Some experts disagree with the idea of a final shoulder check saying that it can distract you from the road ahead. If you're travelling at about 70mph and your glance takes around half a second, you will be distracted from the road ahead for a distance of about 20 metres … However given that you should be leaving the gap of at least 70 metres between your vehicle and the vehicle in front, the should not be a problem. Take my advice … Have a quick glance back!

Good luck with the 70m distance when joining the M25 during rush hour :)

I always signal my intention when joining a motorway.

Highway Code rule 103

103

Signals warn and inform other road users, including pedestrians (download ‘Signals to other road users’ (PDF, 102KB)), of your intended actions. You should always

http://www.direct.gov.uk/prod_consu.../@dg/@en/documents/digitalasset/dg_070566.pdf

I intend to move out to the right or turn right

Which is what I intend to do when changing lane from the slip road to Lane 1.

Signalling gives me no more right of way than if I were turning out of a side road on any other road.

It also gives me an extra reason to blast the horn at anyone not moving over to let me join safely
Beep all you want but you're joining me and hence you should not cause disruption to me. I have right of way.

Isnt one of the guiding rules of the highway code something like "your actions as a driver should not cause another driver to have to change their speed or course"
Completely agree. This is why I'm glad I have the car I do and I put the power to good use. I look for the spot where I want to join and match my speed so I slot in perfectly. If there's no slot, or it's so busy, I will come to a standstill.

People should be using indicators more, not less.
I disagree. People need to think about when they should be indicating. Somehow it gets missed in the thought process of "Oh crap I need to be in that lane over there". Similarly, people will indicate when there's no traffic or anyone else around.

The most annoying indicator crime I see is people (correctly) indicating right to come off at the third exit (assume a roundabout at a crossroads) but not changing to a left indication before exiting. This just confuses and annoys people waiting at the next entrance.
What's worse is when someone is approaching from the opposite side (say 12 o'clock when you're at 6 o'clock) and they indicate left (to come off at 3 o'clock) but then continue to progress all the way round the roundabout!

LOL - it takes all sorts - Motorways are a place where one needs to give EVERYONE as much information as you can as to YOUR intentions....IF we all did this and gave way a little there would be a case for increasing the maximum speed allowable.....

If you think normal slip roads are bad, you shoud try J25 on the M60 where the slip road actually joins the 'fast lane' (for want of a better phrase).

Near carnage 24/7 as slow moving vehicles try and join the motorway and merge as soon as possible rather than wait for a gap to merge into. Madness :bonk:

I join the m4 at junction 11 heading westbound at approx 6:45 every morning travelling to Oxford and indicate religiously.

This week with the weather being especially bad it ensures everyone can see me clearly and minimise any risks. My m4 pet hate is people sitting in the middle lane and shooting out in front of you for no reason.

I will put my hands up to the fact that I will indicate when the weather is bad for the sake of safety, and yes the middle lane shooter is a total pain in the proverbial.
:gag:

The junction where the southbound M42 joins the M40, heading to J3, is a pain.... People coming off the M42 onto the two-lane M40 (the slip road splits into two separate lanes, so two entrances onto M40) is a pain, as people come streaming onto the M40 at a point where traffic is squashed up anyway, plus it starts to get a bit hilly so the trucks all bunch up or even start to overtake a little way further down. The number of folk who don't indicate is massive when theyre actually joining at a faster speed than those on the M40! A recipe for accidents fir sure.
