Non UK Indian Hill Railways

This is something I would love to do. I shall be very interested in the posts. But I have a feeling that they no longer use coal fired steam.

Looks good but I hate being tied down by an organised tour.

Yes, I hate £4.5k too :)

Yes Having holidayed in India before £4.5K dose seem a lot. Last time I went the visa and malaria tablets were expensive and it looks like you have to get these yourself.

4.5K would buy you a small village in rural India! Go independent for best value. Have not done this particular tour but have visited India several times and always just 'turned up' and sorted things when there and got very good value for money. Still have to haggle though.

Sometimes pick up a copy of Steam Railway on the cheapo magazine market stall, last one I bought had a feature on this very subject. Will see if I still have it and what it has to say, guessing as it was in the magazine they still run steam locos

For a start, how about this http://www.darjeelingtours.co.uk/

Had a read and it seems many regular services are diesel, but Steam does still operate for tourist trains. Top section of about four miles is closed following a landslide, but is expected to reopen early next year

A new steam service named the Red Panda is running at weekends to boost the tourist trade, reckon the best bet is book on a tour so you can ride a charter.

Did mention that unfortunately the best views from a photographic angle are when the loco is facing arse end outwards, still looks very interesting. Also said that some stations have been renovated sympathetically following its designation as an Unesco world heritage site (shame that grading doesn't cover the locos, just the fixed assets)

Some cheap tickets to India advertised on holiday pirates at the moment.
