Increasing image size...

Hi folks,

ive taken my canon raw, done whats needed done in psraw, then it saves as a tiff at 300dpi at 3456x2304 and opens in photoshop for me as a tiff i assume, now i want to increase the size of this image (im sure at this size its about 29cm x xx cm ) to an A3 size, the way ive done this is to set a crop at A3 size, and highlight as much of the image as i can then make the crop, save as a jpeg and i get a file size of 5.5meg. But quality is obviously gone.

Another method ive tried but giving same effect by the looks of it is to do as i did up to the photoshop pal, but then goto image resize, and change the dimension to A3 size, save as a jpeg and i get a 10meg file.

is either way a feasiible way to do this or should i be looking at an interpolating program such as GF, or is there another alterative, that maybe looks a bit better than this method, im not particularly bothered about file sizes.

Your second method is the best way with your tools, some say that doing it in smaller steps rather than one jump will improve the quality but others disagree. Also don't forget that you will need to sharpen the final image if its for printing.

BTW there are some excellent photoshop additions that you could use that are made for this job, the one I use in Genuine Fractals but you have to pay for that. Some others may know of some free plugins though...
 
Thanks for the info Steve, is the "smaller steps" you mention, the 10% increment one, ive yet to try this to compare but did hear about it.

SammyC, yes it is for printing, i get this done on photobox, im trying to create various print sizes of same picture to see how far i can go.
 
just to update, i did a comparison with the same photo, first one was just image resize up to the desired a3 size, then a Usm of 180, 0.2, 0 and saved as a jpeg at max, second image was resized using the 10% increments using image resize, i used the bicubic method when increasing, up to the last time and i used bicubic sharpener, then run same usm, and i have to say, the difference was immense.

lmao, sorry about that, the difference was immense, the 10% increment method was the best by far.
 
Can you do a 100% crop of a part to show us this?
 
other options are to re-size the image in PS using bicubic softer option, just do it in one step and it will be fine, in CS2 they've fiddled with the maths and the result is almost as good as printpro.

I don't know which version of PS you're using, or which version of the raw plugin, but in the version I use, there is an option at the bottom to ouput the raw file to a certain size, you can choose to down or upsize the resolution of the image, and the results are great.

thanks for that gandhi, i have cs2, and saw that option but was unsure if that was an ok method, il certainly give it a try and compare to the other two methods ive tried.
