In the market for a new A3+ printer

Following the demise of my Epson 2400, which I fear won't be economical to repair, I'm in the market for a new printer.

I'm not minded to go for another Epson as their ink consumption is too high and components like the waste ink pads and print heads (which are blocked, but that's just the start of my problems) are not user-replacable.

I've narrowed my search down to two: the Canon PIXMA 9500 and the HP B9180.
Both have had good reviews. I have read on other fora about reliability problems with the B9180.

I think, based on what I have read so far, and assuming any reliability issues have been resolved, I would probably opt for the B9180.

Has anyone had experience of these printers and if so, would you recommend them?

I can't help, as I am currently asking the same questions, and as you, seem to be down to the same 2, but maybe with the Canon pixma 9000 added to the list - it is a dye printer, the others use pigment.
Anyone got anything to add that helps more ?
 
I bought Canon pixma 9000 a few months ago after seeing one in action at a workshop and I think its brilliant! I print all sizes for horse events and the A3 comes out pin sharp. Cartridges pretty easy to get hold of and not too expensive if you shop around but it does get through photo magenta and photo cyan pretty quick.
 
I am pleased with my PIXMA 9000. I have the same comment to make as Blackwijet about the photo magenta and photo cyan.

I brought last year the HP B9180 printer.

Saw it in DigitalDepot and if I had the car with me would have come home with it! They had a book of sample prints and to say quality was awesome is an understatment.

Took a little while to get the quality the same as DD but that was down to me having the wrong print settings.

Pretty easy to set up from the box.

It is a heavy printer and very large so you'll need a fair space for it.

Worth reading this review of the B9180.

I haven't seen the HP in action but I have seen the Canon and it is suberb! The guy used Canon paper and Canon ink and printed on site at a pheasant shoot of all places.

I was very impressed!
 
Thanks everyone for your input. We made a decision. This morning, I ordered a new printer - an Epson Styus pro 3800. I hadn't planned to get another Epson but when we did the sums, the extra cost is easily recovered by virtue of the much bigger ink cartridges. Oh, and there's a £150 discount as Epson are doing a promotion where it's possible to save money if you have another Epson printer. It should arrive next week.

Anyone interested in Permajet CIS for the 2400 or some Cleaning cartridges? Send me a PM if you are...

I had an HP B8190 and I absolutely loved it. What a brilliant printer that is. I wish I still had it (sold it, along with a load of other stuff to go traveling). I'm in the market for an A3 printer. Fancy sharing some thoughts on your new baby with us?
 
Thats what I would have suggested (also get the 3 year warrenty to or you could wait untill something went wrong like I did and then bought it lol)

So what does the Epson discount entail - do you need to send back your old printer or what - I have an Epson R220 that works fine, but it might be worth thinking about returning for the refund...

Still, there are some refurbished ones available here in Spain that go for almost half the cost when in stock - sadly, there are none in stock at present..

We had an error message come up saying that there were components that had exceeded their service life (or something like that). I'd been running cleaning/purge cycles to try to unblock the black ink jets, but to no avail. Then the printer completely locked up.

Apparently, there are some waste ink pads in the bottom of the printer that have to be replaced. Sadly, on the 2400, these are not user-replacable and it involves a lot of dismantling of the printer to get at them. I have a suspicion that the print heads need replacing too. So by my reckoning, it was beiginning to look like a very expensive repair job. I estimate something like £350, which for a three-year old printer was not worth it IMHO.

The printer will be offered for sale for spares/refurbishment. I'll sell the CIS separately as there's nothing wrong with it and there's a couple of hundred pounds worth of ink with it.
