hi all

looking to get back into photography but one of my dogs got hold off my 550D and no longer works, need a new body.. staying canon as i have the lenses

looking for recommendations that wont break the bank.. be used for motorsport mainly but looking to do some city breaks next year so would need to be light enough for taking on the plane.

also anyone can recommend a good safe travel backpack that would be great too

What’s your budget? What and how many lenses do you have and what do you mean by ‘motorsport’?

Was the 550d suitable? Or did it frustrate in some way?

£600/700ish

5 :- 50mm 1.8, 18-55mm, 70-200L F4, sigma 24-70 2.8 , samyang 14mm 2.8

track days mainly looking to try others (rallies, MTB, skate parks etc)

it was suitable but with its being older thought might aswell upgrade if im going to replace my damaged one

If you’re properly happy with the 550d, then an 850d is a decent upgrade and will eat all your budget.

But I’d generally advise the better ergonomics of an 80d and save a couple hundred quid.

A second hand 5Diii would fall within budget, especially if the 18-55 was chopped in against it (I think that's your only non-FF lens.)

guessing the 850D would be brand new?

so youd go 5diii over the 80d then?
it's a better camera (all round) but the big questions are around what your future purchases might be. Remember that buying the 5dIII effectively shortens your 70-200, but it does make everything else more useful (bar the 18-55 obvs)

likely if i want/need more range it would be 100-400 L but that would be a while off atm

If you were happy with 550D then the most affordable ###D, eg 850D would be ideal...

Your EF70-200L would be a great match for what you want out of it....

Whilst the safe option is another xxxD series camera, as PhilV has intimated, a camera from the next tier up - an xxD camera, may give you a nicer experience as easier to control without ferretting around in menus to find a particular setting.

Whilst a full frame camera is in budget, this will change how your lenses behave - if you use the long end of your 70-200 for motorsport, you'll now need a 70-300mm lens or a teleconverter to fill the frame in the same way.

Given that the OP's 70-200 is an L lens, cropping in to an image from that will give as good images as a "consumer grade" 70-300 zoom (for anything but larger prints).
