In need of a Tripod!

So far ive been making do with my dads old tripod, from back in the 70's....

I think its about time I updated to something a little newer since I am sick of nearly cutting my fingers off and fiddling to unscrew the camera from the tripod every 30 seconds! :bonk:

I'm basically after some advice :D

Im after something durable for use outdoors for landscape etc, not too heavy but a sturdy one would be nice. My budget is around the £100 mark and I have so far been looking at the Manfrotto 190XDB with the 390RC2 head but i want with with a strap, I think these can be bought separately? Secondly, could anyone suggest where to buy one from? Or any alternative tripods?

LOL. What make is this old tripod? It sounds like you just need a different head on it if takes one - to solve the unscrewing problem.

Even if you get a lighter pod I wouldn't be in a rush to ditch what sounds like a very solid tripod - you never know when you might need it. ;)
 
Seriously it is a bad, bad tripod. I may keep it just incase somebody tries to break into my house if you know what I mean :lol: It doesnt take other heads, its a "Prisma" whatever one of those may be!

It is sturdy though, but just not practical and I really want one with a strap.

I'm wanting to come into the 21st century :)

I wouldn't limit yourself too much on the strap thing though, it should be easy enough to rig something up to sling it over your shoulder, or even *shudder* buy something? The Manfrotto 190 is a well respected well engineered tripod - I can't see you going wrong with one. The choice of head is such a personal thing and your options are huge.
 
The strap thing would be good. I'm sure they will only be a few ££ if I needed to buy one seperately.

Its hard to find one when you dont really know what your looking for :help: All I see when looking for one online is letters and numbers that apparently mean something! They all look the same :lol:

I'm just thinking that I only have a D40, not the biggest of cameras so would one of those 055 XproB's be too, erm, pro? I havent a clue! Cheers again though people :)
 
Not too pro at all. Who knows what lenses you may want to add in future - add a mid range zoom and flashgun and the weight soon starts to build up. ;)
 
I just got a 055xprob today, its fantastic - Got the 804 head with it.

the 055 Xpro B is a fantastic tripod and just what you want when you're out on a windy day trying to get a long exposure :)



disclaimer: I couldn't promise what it will be like in gale force winds etc but from manfrottos advert in the mags it portrays that it will stick to the ground in them :D
 
Well i'm after a 30 second exposure in a category 5 hurricane... Wish me luck :laugh:

If you think the 055 might be too much, then you can get the 190 with some head for £99, it's in this months practical photography, you don't get a strap with that one though and the manfrotto strap is £20 anyway so you may as well go for the 055 anyway as it's a better set of legs :)
 
i've been reading several threads on tripod choice with interest, yesterday i had a chance to play with the 190 xmas kit - nice tripod, and not as heavy as i thought it may be.
i've noticed the adds for these xmas kits state the foam grips are not included but it certainly had them on the demo model i saw.
the 055 i think is taller and heavier?
from what i have read the head is OK, the one on the 190 was good enough for me i think
does anyone know if the 055XB has a bubble level on it?
 
careful, that 190 + head for £99 was identified on one website as having thumbscrews (instead of flip levers) for the legs, as well as no foam. All shop websites appear to have the normal 190XB in the picture, most have identified the no foam situation.

The foam pads I could live without, but thumbscrews for leg adjustment?

Clarify before you buy.
 
the one i saw, which was in je$$ops, definately had flip levers and NOT screws
it was 129.99 for the 190 + head kit
