Ok so after signing up for this years TP52 challenge and failing miserable to keep up. I feel I need to do something to get me out there an taking photo's more then I do.

I know one option it to try next years TP52 but I wondered if there are any others to look at?.

There's the POTY. - maybe a slower pace (one a month) would be better then one a week?

Just jump back in when ever you feel like it, there is nothing to say you have to complete all 52 rounds.
(I missed a chunk out the middle due to work getting silly )

Just start again, from now, and get in practice for next years 52 (y)

Or if you don't want to be "tied down"
Start your own personal project.

I often see the reply to these type of threads as starting a project. This immediately sprung to mind when I read your OP Mark.
It's often suggested that the subject of such projects could come from other interests. What better subject than your Mini's?

Are they fully restored/refurbished? Could you document the work you've done on them? Their details etc?

Hi, you'll get plenty of suggestions and many will be good.

However, do you really need to ask others what project you should do?

Make a list of what interests you. Being interested will play a major part in you keeping the project going.

Cheers and keep us updated.

Whenever I get a bit stuck (and often when I'm not) I look through my catalogue of pictures to see if there are any recurring themes or subjects I haven't developed, or just to see if anything sets me thinking in a different direction.

I was going to write something long (and probably pretentious) but to be honest, this is probably a better way of saying the same thing - shamelessly quoted from one of @Pookeyhead 's comments in another thread...

You need a PURPOSE for your photography. You need a project.

Read chapter 3 of this book... (Selecting a Subject)

Stop trying to make pictures for the sake of making nice pictures, and start using photography to say something. You must have interests that you're deeply interested in apart from photography... bring them together, and use photography to discuss it, show people etc.

Basically, the best, and most satisfying challenges are the ones that you manage to set for yourself... Shooting to someone else's brief (like either the POTY of the 52's ultimately boil down to - you're shooting to a subject or topic that someone else throws at you) is all well and good - but it's far better to actually be CREATIVE and come up with something for yourself...

Thanks for the comments guys.

Yes my other main hobby is indeed Minis well cars in general really.

I agree when your given a subject it can be a bit of a chore. What I managed to do I did enjoy.

I have a couple of areas of photography I want to try out so I will make a list of them and make an effort to get out and try them.

@Brian_of_Bozeat I had thought of doing this [POTY] but not sure if my quality is up to it

Mark, it maybe depends how competitive you are... I mean how much would it hurt if your image wasn't placed in the top ten. If you could bear that, then IMHO the POTY is a great exercise. I will finish this year having entered 36 months, all on film (not sure about next year... but we haven't yet heard if there will be one). I think it's really great at pushing you to get out and shoot a different theme for each month. The slight downside is you only get judge feedback if you're in the top ten in any month. The upside for me is there are usually fewer than ten film entrants, so I get points if not feedback in the film competition that runs alongside the open one! You could try entering this month and next (themes "water" and "colour" IIRC).

As Mark (TBY) says the other really good option is a project of some kind. I'd suggest lurking in the projects and themes forum for a while to get an idea what folk are attempting. I decided to shoot exclusively with black and white film in a rangefinder for over 6 months, and it was a very interesting experience, that I think has really re-engaged my "black and white eye". EDIT: but this is not what they mostly mean about a "project"!

Thanks @ChrisR

I think I am going to have a go at the POTY and see how it goes.

I am coming up with a list of potential projects I have recently inherited a couple of old film cameras one was my great uncles a Kodak Vest Pocket Camera the other was my granddads which I can not remember the model but think it was also a Kodak but a 35mm so I might get these checked out and have a play with them.
