I have one. It hurts. A lot.

I am getting the Toe nail removed soon. Will I be able to walk on it again afterwards or will it take a while?

Reason why I ask is because it will be near the British GT meeting at Oulton Park and I dont want to miss it!!

THanks
Matt

Can't you just hack a bit off it (the nail, not your toe) with a pair of scissors or a stanley knife?

It's going to hurt worse than anything you've ever felt in your life. You'll be in a wheelchair for 3 months, then crutches for another 3 months, then hobbling like 80 year old after a vasectomy for 6 months. The inactivity will turn your urine to jelly and every time you pee it will feel like passing grit in vinegar. Other side effects are uncontrollable diarrhoea, teeth loss and severe itchy eczema. My sympathy.......

And the cause for the ingrown toe nail was?, could it be you have been picking at your toenails and leaving them too short thus allowing the flesh to grow over.

Bit like biting your finger nails only you can't reach them with you teeth.:D

My brother had his removed and IIRC was off work a few weeks.

And he no longer picked his toe nails after that:D

I had both out when I was 14 & had three weeks off school :D

//edit//

it's nothing to do with picking / cutting nails, it's to do with the nail root bed causing the nail to 'curl' in as it grows

I had one when I was a kid. I brought it upon myself because I wasn't cutting my toe nails properly and cut too much from the side. Didn't need removing though, they just cut the sides off and put a chemical there preventing it from in-growing again. Walking around afterwards was a bit of pain though, school and all.

Best thing you can do is get some rest...lots of rest without any distractions....distractions such as posting on TP....:D

Seriously, I know they hurt like hell, and I'm certainly not jelous of you having one and me not :)

"This thread is nothing without photos!" :D

Ouch - never had one hope i never will

gonna hurt like hell ....walking forget that for a few days lol

I had that when i was younger, both toes, if you get the option of a General anestetic(sp), take it you don't want to be awake when they do it:'(

I had one removed recently during my hospitalisation. Didn't feel a thing and didn't have any kind of anaethestic(sp?) either. All I remember was being told I had it, and the next thing it was being "dressed".

You should have joined the French Resistance, it was a favourite Gestapo torture method :)

I had two nails removed. takes ages to grow back. Hurts at first but you soon become used to it. The worst thing is the noise of the old nail coming off - a sort of sucky sound. Was done under local.

Walking home afterwards from the second was funny with a numb foot.

Thank you for all your encouaging posts

Say if I get it done the Monday will I be able to walk by Saturday? Oh and I have been walking around with the bad toe for three years  Never once bothered me. GOt used to it :) THen I fell over and it all got messy :(

b****r :(

And when I said to the nurse that it was painful, she said 'wear sandals'.

In this weather!?!?!?! Are you mental?

Lighten up Heppers, you did make it sound like it didnt hurt because you are big and brave

never had one myself Matt, but I d recall a mate having one removed many years ago and he was on crutches for a week, but I pressume modern medincine has improved slightly since then.....suppose it depends on your pain threshold really

Matt, you're young and I wish you all the best, but a member of my family has had to wear sandals for over a year since her operation; is almost constantly on antibiotics to fight off pseudomonas infections (from puddles, thanks to the sandals); has a district nurse every day; didn't score enough points to continue on incapacity benefit (she did, but they couldn't add them up correctly!); wasn't told the lower rate benefit she was put on would be cut by 20 per cent for daring to appeal against this decision; when the decision was overturned there was no payment in the week of Christmas and a letter of apology stating that she would receive the benefit due to her on 5th January. Still, things could be worse.

I had 2 done. Under general aneasthetic (HUGE phobia of needles). Was good. They pull the whole nail off, and then use something to BURN the nail bed so it doesn't grow back. Was tender for 2 weeks, but then fine!

Only thing now though is that the regrown nail is thicker than the others, and i get a weird side nail growing where it was burnt! Very odd! Though you don't want to see pictures!!!

Cheers, d'you wanna see a snap? :help: :nono:

they aint too bad, had the one removed five times. for some reason my nail really didnt want to die(they tried the acid and scraping the bed of the nail). first time was worst, was only bout 10. cried my eyes out.(really dont like needles now) couldnt take theinjections in your toe, and threw a proper hissy fit when they realised they hadnt used enough to numb the toe. all the other times were at hospital and after the injections in the toe you dont feel anything other than a bit of pulling etc. bout a week recovery time. but you can walk on it properly in bout 3-4 days.

(finally got rid of it on the last go if you are interested)

Matt i had two on each big toe and it hurt like Fark!

I couldn't walk properly for 2 weeks afterwards :(

You could have a metal toe cover made and fitted. Your first step towards your transformation to Darth Vader.

Matt i had a section of my toe taken off on the 30th and its not that bad. Its definitly less painfull than actualy walking around with it. They give you an injection on either side of the toe then you cant feel anything so thats the most painfull bit cos they put something stupid like 5mm of anastetic in your toe then they remove it, put a massive bandage on it. Mine looks nasty now but apparantly its meant to look worse before it looks better..

On the plus side it doesnt hurt anymore :D

Had the exact same as this done about 5/6 years ago whilst I was still at school. Cut out a section of nail about 3mm wide down the left hand side of the nail and killed the nail bed. No nail down the side any more but did leave the rest in the middle.

I had about a week off school with foot in a massive bandage, but was ok to walk around on gingerly after about 3 days.

Bonus was I somehow managed to blag the entire rest of the year out of PE (which I hated!) with another mate who'd had the same nail op done. Winner :D

does it always look a little gammy or does it end up looking the same? I hadn't realized exactly how much nail was in my toe, no wonder it hurt so damn much
