A few days ago I was out in Cardiff town taking a few night shots with Hoodi and the tripod head snapped clean off !!
As I caught the weight of the camera in my hand....I think it took a small knock on a railing, very small....

I took it to Jessops in Cardiff and they called Manfrotto direct from the store and Manfrotto have asked for the camera and the lens that was attached to be checked over for any damage internally.
So my beloved 30d is currently away at Canon being checked out, I am down a tripod and can't do much but edit existing, or go back to film - which might be a laugh ...

Jessops weren't really sure what will happen, the lens was OK for the weight of the tripod, so they should repair and return, and give me a new tripod, but it could take 6 weeks... I find out on wednesday this week.Apparanatly in the hands of head office and Manfrotto for negotiation :bonk:

Jessops do not have any second hand cameras, so I am without one until they fix... Gutted :'( :'(

Apologies Hoodi, I was not in the best of moods after !

Latersz,
Neil

Damn, sorry to hear that mate.

I assume Manfrotto are paying the Canon bills for checking and any possibly subsequent repairs?

Hope you get good news on wednesday :)

i hope they don't get smart about it and say your kit was 1gram to heavy

Snapped off?? What tripod/head was it.

Even if it was just over their limits it would have a margin of tolerance, the fact that it snapped sounds like a defect was present

Hope you get it sorted soon

Interesting to hear that they're taking a look at your camera. It's the right thing to do, I just wasn't expecting it!

Where's this shot you say you have of me, then?

well if it's any consolation.........your fine

I have that head on a 190 series tripod and it holds a much bigger lump than you had on.

to date it's had no problem holding my 20D/grip combo with a 430 ex and a sigma 70/200 f2.8 at some weid angles :)

although i'm wondering how a lever on the head can drop bits down into the legs.

exactly what I thought .....

you are right Hoodi, I thought it odd too, but Jessops said Manfrotto wanted to check, just in case, rather correct any slight issue now than leave it for it to cause more problems further down the line.
I thought it was quite good service at the time, but not being without a camera I'm not so sure ... pic to follow ...

Photo not much but captured Hoodi at work :)

Bad news that. Reminds me why even with camera tripod mounted I usually keep the strap either wrapped round my wrist or round my neck - I'm paranoid that some idiot (probably me!) will manage to knock into the tripod and send it and camera flying!

Fingers crossed you get some good news on the repair time anyhow.

its pretty good of manfrotto to want it checked out, hope it all works out ok!

Update: Yesterday I called Jessops and the manager was out, so I called in to the store tonight.
The manager said it was still in the hands of Canon who were looking at the repair.
I then explained that it was a bit awkward without a lens and body.
She went off and taked at length with her regional manager and 20 mins later came back and said I would have to claim off my insurance ....... :annoyed:

You can imagine the look on my face .... and she started smiling, asked her assistant to go and grab a brand new 30d body out of one of the boxes and handed it to me !! Rather than wait they were prepared to allow me not to loan the body but keep a brand new one.

The 17-85 is being kept in the Canon service department and I'll get a phone call with an update on the repair (if needed) tomorrow.
On top of that I have been given a Manfrotto brochure in store today and told to select a tripod which they will order up for me. Hoping the head/legs I select will also be at no extra cost !! Am I being a bit cheeky now ???

Great customer service, and a big thanks to Jessops. It doesn't always come off, but I find that the best way to approach these kind of things is just to be reasonable, clearly it was not Jessops fault in the first instance that the Tripod broke, but I'm pretty sure that I wouldn't have had a new body today, had I gone in there screaming my head off in the first place ...

Here's hoping more good news on the lens and tripod :)

Well done, good when things work out, int it :D

Good to hear a happy ending - they arent that rare you just dont hear about them as often as you do when the service is bad.

Thats great news mate. Sounds like this Jessops needs a pat on the back :)

It's really warming to hear a good customer service tale like this
I too would send them a letter of thanks. People are always quick to complain but never quick to praise....like said its nice to receive a note of thanks.

Which Jessops store was it, as there are two in Cardiff. I normally go to the small one opposite the castle.

The manageress is great as are most of the staff in that store.

All credit to Jessops for providing service above and beyond

Am I being a bit cheeky now ???

Of course you are not m8 ... you have been incovenienced by clearly duff kit ... you deserve compensation and reparation ...

Jessops are doing the very right thing ...imo ... and should definitely be thanked ... and congratulated for taking the initiative and sorting you out ...very good on them ...

That is not to say you shouldn't get what you can out of the situation ... but kicking the backside out of it may not go down too well ... at the very least you may be expected/asked to contribute for any 'upgrading' ... but then again ...maybe not ...;)

Good luck and well done Jessops for sorting you ... makes a change from the normal 'J' stories ...D

:p

Jessops called yesterday and have told me that I can have a brand new 17-85 lens, they have one in store ready for me to pick up tomorrow. Unlikely to get the upgraded tripod at the same price as the faulty one, but I don't care now. Just well impressed with the service. I have a brand new camera and lens... Yipeee. Thanks Jessops.

Brilliant! Glad it's all sorted, mate!

Result! :)

My only question is why do Jessops feel so guilty/indebted to you?
(and how do I wangle the same?)

Indeed a result. Not sure on the second point. When I dropped the camera in, I didnt whinge and whine, just explained what had happened, so hopefully they saw that I was a reasonable guy ....
I have spent a few bob in there over the last few years... but even so, I really didnt expect this ...

Hope you get things sorted soon.

As for the pic...Wow! That's a view I haven't seen for a while! Erm...I really should think more carefully about the wording of my posts! :D I used to travel along there every weekend to go and visit some student mates when I still lived in Wales!

We're probably going to be down in Cardiff either this weekend or the next with the cameras.
