Ok what am I doing wrong here. I have just taken some shots of my iphone on a slight angle. Using an 18-55mm and studio lights right up close on a tripod. Having used a light meter to expose it gave me a value of f7.1

I focused on the volume buttons thinking that if they were in focus then at f7.1 the tip of the phone would also be in focus, however the tip wasn't ? Is this just a case that I should have shot around f16 ? I cannot find anything on the net which shows a diagram of sorts for the plane of focus. The closest I got was a good YouTube clip of someone photographing a building and he said he wished he should have shot it at f13 to get the corners of the building in focus as he focused on the centre of this building. I'm not even sure I'm making sense here

Look up some DoF tables, you need much smaller apertures close up.

With the lens that close, depth of field will be small.

You have a tripod and a non-moving subject so don't need to worry really about shutter speed. Use one of your smallest apertures - f16 or f22.

Also try focusing about one - third into the subject to help maximise depth of field.

Thanks peeps. I have found no end now on hyperfocul distance tables etc. muchas gratis! Out of curiosity I took a shot of some perfume using two soft boxes. You can clearly see the reflection of the soft boxes on the bottle. Is this something you try to avoid as much as possible or place it simply in a position that looks flattering? Take a look on my previous photo link to Flickr and look for a red bottle of hypnotic perfume to see

Try here.

Garry is the maestro at tricky lighting.
