As most phones use micro usb any quality oem in car charger will do. I have tried the dirt cheap tesco/asda types and found them poor and unreliable.

The fact is this - the retail value of an S4 is around £500. The power and data port is in use pretty much all the time and if damaged can cost £££ to get it fixed. A bit more for the charger is money well spent. In my opinion naturally.

I bought a ciggy lighter USB adaptor and mini USB lead from Asda, total cost about £7 and it works like a charm on my S3

You have to watch the outputs, some of the cheapies do not have enough amps to run the phone and charge the battery, particularly if you are running e.g. satnav.
A lot of cars are getting USB sockets as part of the radio, even my pickup has a USB socket (but it's in the glove box so I have on for the lighter thing too).

It's the output I'm concerned about so I guess spending a bit more would be worth it .

I wouldn't use anything other than the manufacturer's specified lead or one from a quality third party manufacturer eg Belkin. You know you have some kind of back up.

I have a Belkin USB adapter that plugs into the cigarette lighter. I just plug in any one of the following, tablet, phones, mp3 player and video camera battery charger, with their respective leads and all charge just fine.

After wasting probably £20 on cheap car chargers and cables for my Samsung Galaxy Note, none of which would maintain charge whilst using Satnav I finally paid up £10 for the original Samsung charger from Amazon and everything has been fine ever since.
