In car cameras

I'm not convinced on that one to be honest. It surely applies to sat navs and what not. Why would having an LCD screen showing the view from the front camera be any more dangerous than having a sat nav on? I have my camera, iPod and sat nav mounted all the time and for my MOT I just remove the suckers before it goes in. Never had a problem. Also, have you seen how much crap the police have on their windscreens lately? They're just as bad!

Reg 109 Con and Use Regs 1986.

Television sets

109.—(1) No person shall drive, or cause or permit to be driven, a motor vehicle on a road, if the driver is in such a position as to be able to see, whether directly or by reflection, a television receiving apparatus or other cinematographic apparatus used to display anything other than information—

(a)
about the state of the vehicle or its equipment;
(b)
about the location of the vehicle and the road on which it is located;
(c)
to assist the driver to see the road adjacent to the vehicle; or
(d)
to assist the driver to reach his destination.
(2) In this regulation “television receiving apparatus” means any cathode ray tube carried on a vehicle and on which there can be displayed an image derived from a television broadcast, a recording or a camera or computer.

The interesting bit is (2), where it defines Television recieving apparatus. Keeping in mind this Regulation is from 1986, and the world has moved on, ie LED/LCD screens, rather than CRT's.
But this is a Regulation, and doesn't need an Act of Parliament to update, so even if the Courts wont interpret the intent of the original meaning that LCD/LED should be included, it is a 10 minute job for it to be amended, which it will be.
Obviously this is only bad news for people if it can be seen in any way by the driver. If not then no problem.
 
I wish i had one of these in the rear today. Had a man in a van pull up behind me at some road works, lights had only just gone red. He lit a cigarette, had a mouthful from a standard coffee cup, then I spotted a toddler move on his lap. I'm no grass but this is one i'd take into the police. Unfortunately I didn't get his reg number before he pulled off onto another road.
 
To clarify, would this then rule out using your phone's video camera as a car dash cam as the screen will be active showing the footage?

What about reversing cameras? Blind spot cameras that some have?
 
My dashcam has a flip lcd screen a bit like one on a camcorder, It doesn't have to be open when recording.

Its silly all these regulations and laws they keep coming out with. Soon we wont be allowed ot have the radio on or allow passengers in the car just in case they talk to you and distract you
 
I added one of those to the rear of mine to double up on security.
 
could have done with one of these today when a car was coming straight at me on the slip way to the a12, frickin idiot did a 3 point turn on the slip road and went back
