In camera metering

Hiya guys a realy basic question i usualy work with off camera flash and dont know much about available light.

My question is when metering for avaialbe light in m mode is the center or is it metering my focus point that is being metered? spot metering usualy ie if its off center?

I don't think the 350D has spot metereing....

But if you use a camera that has spot metereing it is the centre focus point (for a Canon anyway) - about 3%

Partial metering gives you abou 10-15% of the frame

A: NO, on cannon at least, when you you use spot metering it uses the centre of the lens or the centre/main focus point only.

If I have it wrong then please correct me...

So meter off your hand at the point of the subject then. OR, if the light is the same in both places, meter off your hand anyway - it is near enough 18% tone., not grey (unless you have been working on the bike, then it is more black!)
