In addition to a nifty 50, what lens would you take to a wedding?

No
My friends have asked me to take some shots at their wedding. Don't worry - they have hired a pro as well (and he has been informed that I will be there too - obviously not interfering).

I only have 3 lenses – a Canon nifty fifty, Canon kit 18-55 and a Sigma 70-300. Obviously the fifty will be fast and useful inside the Church (no flash), but for the rest of the day I thought I’d hire something a bit more flexible. Hiring of the lens will also allow me to try before I buy!

I’m thinking along the lines of some fast glass, probably a 24-70mm f/2.8. If you were in my shoes and you had budget to hire a lens, what lens would you go for?

Camera is a Canon 400D btw.

I don't do weddings - but I'd have an 85 1.8 (got that myself and it's far nicer than the 50 1.8 which I assume you are using), a 70-200 2.8, and a wideangle like a 16-35 2.8.

plenty to choose from, as mentioned

70-200 2.8 for the candid shots,

17-55 2.8 is an option as well..

The faster te better really

What coincidence!!! I have the same camera, the same 3 lenses in my kit as you, AND I have arranged to hire the 24-70 f2.8 from Calumet for a friend's wedding this Saturday.... unbelievable!!!

The only downside of the day is that both have been married before but this time there is no church, they are getting married at a hotel in a private family ceremony, and they only want me to take some photos at the reception venue.

Nice one - be sure to let me know how you get on! Love to see some shots!

first let me say I've never shot a wedding, then let me say I've never used this lens! However I'm thinking something similar for my sister's wedding and will prob hire a 17-55 2.8, however I am toying with the idea of the 100mm Canon Macro - £28 for week from lensforhire who have a good rep on here, and might allow me \ you to get some unusual shots. I believe it is used as a portrait lens as well as a macro.

I asked question for more unusual shots here: http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=135924

Good luck whatever you decide.
