Ok, as you may know. I have no camera for another 2 or 3 weeks. So rather than cry into a warm pint of larger, I thought I'd improve my photoshop skills.

What photoshop techniques would you say are vital to a photographer in post processing?

I've also created CS3 actions for the following sharpening techniques, having spent the last couple of days reading up on them

High Pass
Luminosity
Edge Sharpening

If you would like a copy please pm me with your email address and I'll forward the actions onto you.

Contrast masking.....HAve a search on here, HuN did an excellent tutorial on it.

Effective cloning.....Just practise I guess.

Conversion to Mono.....Always a good skill and is hard to get right sometimes.

Exposure blending.....Using one shot for the sky and one for the foreground

Making selections......I find this one the hardest to get right without leaving halos or white bits. I try to avoid doing it if possible!

There are many tutorials on all of the above on the web, have a google and they will all save your bacon and/or help add some punch to your shots!

Maybe you could start a 'Pimp my shot' type thread and then get people to explain exactly what it is they did and more importantly WHY they did it.

Photoshop work is all well and good but I get the impression that sometimes people just do it because they can and want to show of their skills rather than improve a shot. You just have to look at some of the mank on flikr!

Good luck with it though Ger, good to see you not resting on your laurels whilst you're without camera!

cheers spencer. for your ideas. I'll work through them shortly. I've already done the contrast masking and action setup :). It does produce some very good results and is a very good technique to know. Thanks for the link MV saves me searching

Just keep an eye on noise in the image.

things can get a bit flaky if you push it all too far!

I agree with you on he noise. I have set the action up to pause, so I gain control over the noise in the image.
