I have the standard 18-55mm canon kit lens - so no IS and no USM. It does most of the stuff I need in one package - quite wide, a bit of macro, small tele etc. But I'd like more quality please :)

I've been looking, but I can't seem to find anything that does all of the above but with better quality. My budget is £100 ish (new or 2nd hand, yeah, I know!)

mostly I shoot landscapes/buildings/flowers

any ideas?

also thinking of getting a 2 element diopter - any good?

thanks in advance

To be honest your only real choice up to price is the upgraded 18-55mm with IS - it is a better lens than the one you have but not massively.

You could also add a raynox DCR-250 for the macro - they are about £40 and do allow you to get much closer to stuff.

I agree with this. I found it slightly sharper than the non IS.
I personally would wait until you can add a little more cash to the £100 and take a look then.

You will be much better off sasving a little more nad getting the tamron 17-50, this will be a vast improvement on what you have now. I think the for the difference in IQ going to the kit IS would not be worth you spending your money.

Agree with above. You're better off waiting until you can double your budget to around the £200 mark, then you're looking at the likes of Sigma 17-70, Tamron 17-50, Canon 17-85 etc. These will offer a noticeable improvement.

You dont mention which body you are using, but tbh my wife had that lens on our 50D and I reckon its a stunning little lens, especially for the money, ok build quality isnt wonderful but the images can be great, what you could do is supplement it with a 50mm f1.8, cheap but again really good image quality, add a Raynox macro supplementary lens (no idea of price) and you'll up your game as far as macro is concerned.

it's a 400D Matt :p

thanks for the replies

I think I just can't decide what I want another lens for. My son has said he'll buy me one for xmas, so maybe I could just try the nifty 50? Would I see a huge difference in quality? (when someone offers to buy you a lens it's like..... oooo, xmas ha ha)

going to google the Tamron now :)

The Fifty offers different abilities than the standard lens, and excellent image quality for the price.

A lot of the images on my Flickr were taken with either the Tamron or 50mm 1.8
