I'm returning to photography after a time away, last camera was a Canon 5D MKiii,.

my budget is more restricted now and I'm seeing new cameras and how things are moving on.

I was considering buying a used Canon 7d mk 2 along with a canon 17-40 f4 and canon 70-200 non IS f2,8 which would get me within my 2k budget.

My type of photography is purely pleasure while out walking and visiting new places, I'm not looking to win any prizes and I have sight limitations.

My question is obviously I want to get the best I can with my money and having been away I don't know what's out there and hoped if there is a better option someone could point me in the right direction.

If you don't mind the weight, why not go back to a 5D3 set up. If you do mind the weight, I know two Canikon guys who have jumped to CSC : one to Fuji and one to Sony. Might be worth a look.
 
If your not a sports or wildlife shooter then I think a CSC could be perfect for you. Good quality images from any of the main names, fuji, panasonic, sony or olympus just continuous AF is not at DSLR standards.
 
I had a 5D3 system and swapped it all for a Fuji X-T1. Wouldn't go back now. Quality at my level is more than adequate. Weight saving is enormous and cost is much less. You'll get more for your money than staying with Canon and for what you say you need this or the Sony or similar systems will be more than adequate for your needs.
 
Well if you don;t need the shallow DoF - I'd go M43, I've not tried the Fuji (but have heard good things), I have however had a 5D3 and went to M43 (EM-10 then E-M1) for a time but eventually came to Nikon - I know!

But the M43 certainly had me for a while, it was fast (considering), lens quality was generally excellent, the size was something else altogether and and the EVFs are something I still miss now from time to time.

Edit - Come to think of it have a poke through my albums - some are grouped by kit, including the 5D3, E-M10 and E-M1 so you can see how they fare in the hands of the same person (link)

thank you everyone this is all new to me never had anything other a DSLR so I think ill be doing some reading up tonight as I don't even know what a CSC is (excuse my ignorance) !!!!
 
The only thing I would be less convinced about is action/ sport/BIF with a CSC...

No, you are right but interests change and I find myself thinking that BIF is very important! And I am feeling the draw of MACRO with butterflies too.
 
I used to do BiF with the EM1, okay gulls so not that challenging but still, oh and the x2 crop is great for reach

Oh and macro :)

Actually focus peaking is excellent for macro

Again thank you, I have been doing some reading and I feel a DSLR will suit me better, I'm not into sport however I have a young Golden retriever who I like to photograph while chasing around and I like to go to the odd airshow, so I just feel a DSLR offers less restrictions and I feel my 2k budget will allow a decent kit for my needs.
So still thinking 7D MKII unless anyone can think of a better option with regard a DSLR?
 
If you're stuck with Canon (there's support groups for us).

I wouldn't buy the 7dII today unless you really feel the need for some of the pro level requirements (tougher build - twin card slots), the new 80d beats it hands down in IQ, and has all the bells and whistles too - WiFi, GPS and a rear tilting touchscreen.

That said, the 6d will give you similar IQ to your old 5dIII with some enhancements but without the pro level features (with less weight too)
 
Well when I came back to DSLR I switched over to Nikon and the D750 and it's been a very good choice for me, full frame, good AF, if you bought one second hand (check that the recall has been done) you could get some decent glass with the rest, Tamron 70-200 2.8 for example

BTW check camera size compare (I forget the website) but for a full frame the D750 isn't too big or heavy

Thank you I have owned both Canon and Nikon in the past I just find Canon lenses less expensive and the 70-200 f2.8 my favourite lens ever. so ill take a look at the 80D and the Nikon D750 I'm not too worried about FF crop can be a blessing at times.
 
The 80D does have better IQ than the 7DII but the 7DII is faster, has much better AF and feels more rugged. The swivel screen on the 80D is nice as is the Servo mode in live view focussing. Wi-Fi occasionally comes in handy but it doesn't have GPS.

They're very much tit-for-tat and I think the 80D is the better all-rounder. However if you do like to shoot fast moving objects then the 7DII is the better choice and still a very good all-rounder.
 
Having just bought the 80d after my 1D3 died ,and also having access to one 7d and two 7Dmk2 in the household ,I can say that the 80D is superb after only a couple of days with it I,m very pleased with the results and I certainly haven't noticed any real difference in use ,I owned a 70D before as well and this one is streets ahead in every way .still early days but good enough to rate it very highly ,and to be perfectly honest the 7Dmk2 left me underwhelmed which is why I went for the 80D
