Importing RAW files in to Bridge to retain in-camera profile

I had the same problem with my D700 RAW files but since moving to my Canon 5D MkIII the issue is even more noticeable.

When shooting with the 5D MkIII I have the in-camera profile set to Portrait to give a nice look to my RAW images on the LCD on the back of the camera. However, when I import the CR2 files in to Bridge and load up the thumbnail views I usually get a split second view of the nice colourful & contrasty look then the image goes a lot flatter as the camera’s profile is lost.

When opening the files in ACR for editing I have the profile set to ‘camera portrait’ but is this just a generic camera portrait mode or is it reading the specific portrait profile from the 5D MkIII RAW file?

Basically what I want to know is how I import images in to Bridge and retain the same look as I see on the back of camera.

I could be wrong but I don't think any of the progs look at the profiles from the camera.

I think you have to consider setting up an action in PS to do that when you open a new RAW.

What you see on the rear of the camera is a jpg image, with the 'portrait' setting applied. What you see when you import a raw file from the camera to Bridge and view in ACR is a raw file, no settings applied. A raw file is just that, a raw file no settings, mods, profiles, applied.

Thanks for the replies.

On my D700 if I set the camera in mono mode then I'd get a mono image as the thumbnail in Bridge. Is that not just because a profile has been imported with the RAW? Surely its possible with other in camera processing too.

Strange, are you sure the file you are looking at in Bridge is a raw file?

If I set the camera profile to mono (Canon) and take a raw shot it shows in colour in Bridge and when openen up in ACR it's also colour because it's a raw file....................well it did the last time I looked!

That's because RAW files have an embedded JPEG which most programs use as the preview.

This.

That embedded jpeg will have been created using the camera profile that was set when the image was shot. But all raw processing programs (except for DPP for Canon's raw files) will ignore all of those settings.

I'm not sure about ACR and Bridge, but with LR the thing is to set the default develop settings to something that looks good.
