I have always successfully downloaded images straight from memory cards to PC (Windows 7) having setup my required destination - the images have always loaded with the DSC. . . . . . file name
Just purchased Nikon D5100 and downloaded the accompanying software
Now my downloads go to a different location and just carry the number 001, 002, 003, etc
On the box on the PC I click on "Image settings" but nothing happens

Any ideas on what to do ?

Not a Nikon user so can't say for sure but it may be there is an option eith on the camera or softwaare that is set to prefix each image with a number. You may be able to adjust this in the settings but as I am a canon user can't point you to the exact spot. Have a quick look in the manual index which may have it listed.

Think its something to do with the file numbering option in the camera's general menu setting

I would imagine you are using the Nikon software to download your images. You don't have to do this but can use instead Windows itself and just copy and paste from the memory card in 'My Computer'. From there you can name all files to whatever suits you.

I imagine that it must be the Nikon software which is changing the file names. I'm sure that by default the camera will use DSC... file names.

Sounds like you're using Nikon Transfer to get the images from your card to the computer - if not then ignore the rest of this message :)

In NT, click on the "primary destination" tab
Working from left to right -
a) set your destination folder
b) choose how you want the files stored and the naming convention for folders
c) make sure "rename files during transfer" in unchecked

That should sort you out, I think.

Just so you know, the file name differs depending on which colour cpace you have set in the camera. If you have sRGB set then the files start "DSC_" but if have aRGB set then it becomes "_DSC" ... don't ask me why

Hope that helps :)

Thanks, guys, for all the replies - have now managed to import correctly using the Nikon software

Cheers
