Yes
If you buy your memory cards from a store like Warehouse Express, Jessops, Calumet etc then this topic isn't really going to concern you much as memory cards bought from these stores are all real.

However, if you do, or have done in the past, bought memory cards (in particular SanDisk Extreme or Ultra cards) from eBay or Amazon Used & New then this topic may be very useful to you.

I recently realised one of my cards, a SanDisk Extreme IV was a fake. I'm making this topic to help others spot a fake as they can't be fairly tricky to spot and I think it's unacceptable to sell fakes as they don't perform nearly as well as the real ones. False advertising too, so report any eBay user you spot selling fakes.

Packaging
The packaging from fake cards is notoriously hard to tell fake-from-real. This is because most of the time fake cards actually come packaged in real packaging. My fake Extreme IV came in a real Extreme IV box. It's easy to get old of original packaging for next to nothing so people just package fake cards in real boxes.

They will often include all original manuals and even a recovery CD.

Label/Sticker
Again, like the packaging, the stickers are more than often real stickers. However, the SanDisk Extreme and Ultra cards have a holographic part (the text that says 'SanDisk Extreme' so hold it to the light and see if it's a hologram. If not, it's a fake. Also bear in mind that fake cards do often come with holographic stickers.

Serial number
The serial number is another easy way to spot a fake. ALL SanDisk Extreme and Ultra cards have a white 12-digit serial number printed on the rear side.

This is a photo from a real SanDisk Extreme III card bought from Calumet:

And here's the fake Extreme IV card bought from eBay:

Also bear in mind that some fakes have fake serial numbers (or serials which don't relate to SanDisk cards) so check everything listed in this topic against your card to see if it's fake.

Corner of cards
A final way to spot a fake is the actual corner of the plastic of the card.

Real cards have a slightly rounded edge, fake ones don't.

Go check your card if you bought from eBay, I was pretty annoyed that I had been scammed like this, especially since I had no idea for months that I had bought a fake.

Sorry if it's a bit long-winded, but it's important to get the right card, firstly because that's what you paid for, and secondly it's a pain having a camera that can shoot 6, 8 or 10 frames a second only to be held up by a cheap knock-off memory card.

Oh and if a mod could do something with this topic so future TP'ers could see it, that would be good...otherwise it will just get buried.

:)

Not sure, can't remember as it was a while ago.

That Extreme IV was probably about £10/£15.

Yeah but with something like memory cards you don't really think about it too much, you just assume stores like Calumet and Jessops are ripping you off because it's a bit of camera kit that is essential.

And the price difference isn't huge, it's not like people are flogging them for a fiver each.

I got 2 SanDisk Ultra 2 CF cards from a shop on ebay, having read this i though id check, they turn out to be legit :) Having everything that your 'real' photo's show :)

And best of all, i only paid £7 each :)

Just checked my two 4gb Extreme III cards and they look genuine according to this thread. I paid less than £12 each so was worried for a few minutes!
There is also a good article here from ebay, goes into a bit more detail, but basically the same info.

Another pointer is Sandisk cards with 'Made in Tiwan' are fake.

I got a mymemory from e-bay a while back 4GB Hi>>speed for 8 pounds look genuine enough and works very well 400 shots with RAW .....770 JPeg the Sandisk extreme II is genuine as well that came with the camera.

Regards mark

I've been caught in the past and I just wouldn't buy cards off ebay now. The problem is that these fakes are so widespread that many of them are being sold in good faith I'm sure.

You'll see a huge difference when you come to download a card of images to you PC too.

Yeah my fake one takes much longer than my real one.

Yes but realistically speaking from a rep dealer you would be paying around £40 for a Sandisk IV 4GB so it would make me sus.

I usual but from these guys and have yet to have a problem.

This must be good then ;): http://www.play.com/Electronics/Ele...ompactFlash-8GB/Product.html?searchtype=genre

I can't believe it's got 1 review say it's 'very much worth the money'. Still I suppose it is delivered free :bonk:

Another way is to insert the card into the reader/pc and right click properties. If its genuine it will show as this:

Not that I'd ever buy cards from Ebay, but this is a really useful post....any chance of making it a sticky?

hmm .. very interesting info there .... i recently got 2 4GB Ultra II's off the bay and both looked fake to be honest. They were both slightly different in the printing design. I questioned this with the seller and i was offered a no quibble refund and didnt have to return the disks either .. :)

problem now is could these disks actually casue damage to either of my DSLR cameras ..

Are there any programs to actually check the data throughput of these cards to indicate that they are in fact fakes ... i did a check in windows and it didnt say Sandisk ... it just said USB device.

Volusian,
I am fairly sure they are fakes then. I was told how to do this by a Sandisk rep after being ripped off on Ebay too.
I havent bought memory from there since. Just not worth the risk of losing or corrupting data.

thanks kev ...... however i do have a genuine Ultra II CF card (or is it ) from a reputable dealer that also does not show up as Sandisk (as you show) either in my card reader or if the Camera is connected directly. I use Win XP if that makes a difference .. It does have writing on the edge though with a serial No .... my other cards dont have this information ..

Also has anyone heard of 8GB Kingston CF Ultimate cards being fake ? ... ive just ordered 1 via tinternet ...

Interesting. I have 6 Sandisk cards. All show as shown. Maybe they introduced it later on to try and help identify fakes?
I recently purchased 2 Sandisk Ducati 4gb discs. I have just checked them and came up with this, as expected...

I had a Kingston CF card fail recently.
I complained to Kingston - just in case they would replace it.
It proved to be a fake. I gave them details of the e-bay seller and reported the seller to e-bay.

You'll get good service from Kingston if you contact them via this e-mail address if you want to check for fakes .
( they'll need a photo of the back of the card )
