Ok so im going to Miami in December for xmas and wanted to get a new iphone 5. If I was to send the box and receipt home and walk through customs with the phone in my possession would I avoid import tax?

Possibly, but it's a long way from home if you get caught by twitchy US Customs :nono:

No. You'd be evading import tax which is a different thing. Plus accessories would be for the US market so you'd need a UK charger. If it went wrong you'd have to send it back to the US.

It isn't worth the hassle.

You can bring goods in up to the value of £390 without paying tax or duty. Don't know how much the IP5 is in the US though.

Otherwise, apart from the issues raised by others, it could be a rubber glove job. Do you feel lucky? :)

You sure?

As well as import tax and duty there is Import VAT @ 20% -= if you get caught (which I seriously doubt you would)...... Although it's not legal

Possibly but they might well find it, fine you and confiscate the phone :D

VAT @ 20%.

There's still import duty though.

No there's not :p

Quoted from the link I posted above (HMRC):

Other goods including perfume and souvenirs
You can bring in other goods worth up to £390 without having to pay tax and/or duty.
If you arrive by private plane or private boat for pleasure purposes, you can only bring in other goods worth up to £270 tax and duty free.
If you bring in any single item worth more than your allowance, you must pay duty and/or tax on the full item value, not just the value above the allowance. You also cannot group individual allowances together to bring in an item worth more than the limit.

Additional conditions when bringing goods into the UK
To qualify for the tax/duty free allowances you also need to meet the following conditions:
You must transport the goods yourself.
The goods must be for your own use or as a gift. If the person you give the goods to pays you in any way (including reimbursing you for any expenses), then it's not a gift and you'll have to pay the duty and/or tax.
To bring in alcohol or tobacco you must be aged 17 or over.

That'll explain the confusion..... I regularly get bills but the courier is bringing them in.

There wasn't any confusion :) - the OP was talking specifically about going to Miami and bringing something back.

If stuff's coming over by post/courier then EOS_JD's figures apply.

No my confusion, I didn't know there was a difference.

It won't work on uk 4g though, us has different frequency (see iPhone 5 thread in computers). Only the euro model will work with our 4g.

And with the bands that are coming up for auction for O2 and Voda to buy - None of the models will work on 4G! Only EE will be able to offer 4G Linky

It's probably academic anyway - the iPhone 5 will no doubt be more than £390 in which case taxes apply on the whole amount.
