Yes
I'm thinking about buying a Sigma 24-70 f/2.8 from Digital Rev as new they are a lot cheaper than buying in the UK. What sort of import tax would I have to pay if it is stopped, and how likely is it to happen?

Anyone have any experience importing with Digital Rev (or others)?

Thanks:)

Look for their guaranteed no tax offers (a bit dearer but less than the duty) and get one of those. I have found them fine to deal with.

David.

import tax is the same as VAT as far as i know, and its hit for miss if u have to pay for not.

Think I bought my 70-200 from them last year. They claim the item is a repair and in that way avoid any charges.

Worked for me ... :woot:

:agree: - Their Ebay shop also seems to have cheaper prices than their .com site - I bought a camera from them on a "no tax" offer & when stung for duty & carriage charges by FedEx Digital Rev reimbursed me within minutes of receiving a copy of my invoice from FedEx
My only other advice on buying from HK would be if the price is similar at Onestop Digital then use them as the guarantee "no tax" on everything & stand by that promise
HTH ... Paul ;)

If you buy from them direct via their web site they add the VAT at source, so no further duty to pay. As they tell you on their eBay auctions, you are liable for duties. It's a chance you take buying from eBay but slightly cheaper if you don't get hit with import duties.

Got a Sigma EM 140 ring flash from them through their web site last week. Paid £202 in total (inc P+P, Vat etc). Arrived within 4 days. Damn good I thought.

Unfortunately the 24-70's don't have any "No VAT" guarantees on them from Digital Rev. What charges would I have to pay if they are stopped bearing in mind the lens and postage cost £200?

Thanks.

Have you tried their web site? You can go through their checkout system and it'll add the VAT. You can do this and it calculates the total cost for you. If you don't want to buy, just don't hit the pay button. No commitment is made. Simple.

You would be charged £35 VAT plus any brokerage fee the couriers add on. Probably another £20. You could ask them to send it as a gift or declare the value under £18.

Thanks. :)

Looks like i'll see about getting it off of Onestop (thanks PaulBoy) as it's only £18 more and it seems like it will be worth it if it could cost that much.

Duty on a lens is 6.7% + VAT + courier fees. Also Sigma have stated claims on the international warranty must be accompanied by receipts for vat and duty.

Hmm so to all intents the warrenty will be void? Thats a bummer.

if you register with digitalrev they work out all the tax and shipping at the checkout before you pay so there are no nasty surprises.

I found them excellent.

I bought my Nikon D40 from Digital Rev.

The pack included a photocopied manual in english (which doesn't really bother me) but they provided Nikon's own software (Picture Project 1.7 I think) in Japanese. When I asked if they could send me one in english they said that they were unable to but suggested downloading it for free instead.

The problem with this was that I discovered my Nikon was a "grey market product". This is where Digital Rev buy them in from Japan and then send them onto the UK/Europe as its chepaer this way. As a result the Nikon websites would not let me register my camera/lens with them saying that I would have to go to the Japanese site. Unfortunately the english part of the Japanese site didn't appear to have been updated very recently and as a result I couldnt donwload the software anyway!

The biggest kick in the teeth though was that although I got a good price from Digital Rev, when I received my pack from UPS they told me I owed them £45 in import tax:shake:. I was not impressed! It ended up costing me more than if I had have just gone to Jessops!

That aside, I have been really impressed with my camera and have no complaints on that side of things. After advice on this site I ended up getting my hands on Adobe Photoshop Elements 5.0 so would possibly have not used the Nikon software anyway!
