Hey chaps,

I'm looking to replace my CnC router for a larger unit that I've found in China, however I have never imported a large item before.....

The declared value is $2800 inc of shipping and insurance to a port of my choice (which will be Southampton as that is the closest)

Anyone have any ideas of the costs involved and what I would need to do to collect such? I'm just costing up whether it is cheaper to build my own using UK parts or to have it arrive completed for £900 cheaper using the same parts but without UK profiteering involved.

Might be worth using a shipping agent. Contact one based in southampton dock.

Don't know if you've ever seen the show shipping wars on sky while there is a UK version too so you could always put the spec. Of the load on there and get them to bid to ship it to you :)

Edit: try here http://www.uship.com/uk/

Neil, tried that and it worked out around £308 all in, Rob - I was contemplating that but is there any benefit to it? Matt, never heard of the show but will give it a go :)

My understanding from what I believe is, I buy it, it gets delivered to Southampton and I get a call from customs saying they want me to pay tax and I collect it, it's an 8 x 4 ft box weighing 250, but I have a tail lift Luton to hand to pick it up as it's only a 30 mile journey from Salisbury, I just can't justify paying £6995 for the same thing from someone in the uk!

PM me if you're stuck.
This is what I do for a living. (Legal Dept. of an import/export co.)
