Hi,

Just wondering if anyone can give me a rough idea of how much import duty I would be likely to pay if I bought something S/H from America, which cost around £100?

It's an electronic viewfinder for my Panasonic GF1, if that makes a difference.

Thanks

Hi Grum,

Don't think there is any import duty for this...think you are allowed up to £118.

Are you asking about import duty or VAT?

Different things...

You would be liable for both import duty and vat I think.

Will you pay duty on secondhand goods?

Sorry by import duty I just meant the total of any charges. That links seems to do the trick.

Is it the same for secondhand as new items then? Duty and VAT?

Thanks everyone.

Not sure about second hand goods - if you pay the same or not. Best thing do if unsure is give the HMRC a call. They'll be able to clarify this for you.

VAT's charged on the shipping cost, too.

And then the Post Office adds a whopper for collecting the duty. You can't win:)

I bought some items from Kirk USA last year total cost if I recall correctly was around £110 inc postage.
When I received said goods I also got a bill from the curriers for £28, £23 for customs and £5 for couriers admin:(
So didn’t work out that cheap in the end

The only way to do it really is to find out if any friends are going to america. Thats what I'm doing in the summer. Getting my cousin to get me a couple of lenses :)
