Taking my son to see Rogue One early next week and was thinking about going to the IMAX one, but I've never been to the IMAX before. Does anyone know if IMAX is worth it? The film will be 3D but I'm sure I read that it wasn't actually shot using a proper IMAX camera with the exception of the odd scene and was upscaled instead.

Also, how do the 3D glasses work if he already wears normal glasses?

IMAX can be more immersive, but ideally you need to sitso that you can't see the edges of the screen. He'll wear the 3d specs over his own, no problem

Great thanks, I'll give it a try.

Can make you feel a tad queezy with certain scenes. Don't be put of though, thats if you have not been yet. Worth going just for the sheer size of the screen.
I like the cinema put have only been to a few on the Imax. Polar express when it first came out looked great on it.
Not into 3d myself but the huge screen is pretty cool.

We saw Rogue One at the small IMAX at Glasgow science centre. It was great. We sat in the middle of the row, right at the back and it was a great view. If I sit too close I feel queasy. Had to close my eyes when watching the Joseph Gordon-Levit film about the high wire across the WTC.

I went to the Bluewater Imax and was disappointed, does not compare with the Waterloo one

If you're going to an IMAX in a multiplex the screen is usually the biggest they have available and corner to corner, which isn't really that big when most of them already use corner to corner. The advantage comes from using two projectors to create the 3d effect rather than a filter so the picture is much brighter (imagine leaving a CPL on the lens full time, then removing it) and the sound... so much nicer! It's usally £5 more per ticket here for IMAX so I only use it if it's a film I think would take advantage of the 3d effects or soundtrack.

I ended up going to the regular cinema and glad I did as I was a little disappointed with the film. It's impressive in its own right but was nowhere near as good as the previous new one and just didn't quite have that Star Wars feel to it. Still enjoyable though.

Now I've just seen this thread so it's maybe too late to comment, but I've just watch this movie on IMAX 3D and on regular 2D screening.

I won a competition for the IMAX so I took my Dad. I loved the size of the screen and I felt totally immersed with it. The 3D was OK but it's not a movie that was filmed in 3D so there isn't much happening in it. It was a bright picture and I could see well even on the dark shots.

In comparison, I went with a couple of mates to watch the 2D version and the reason was because one of my mates is a professional cameraman and he reckoned that it's a better experience to watch the 2D as it was intended. For me though, the contrast was pretty poor and the black were grey with little definition. Towards the end of the movie when the shots are bright it was OK. The screen was small (normal cinema screen size) so I was constantly aware of my surroundings, meaning every time someone got up talked I was aware of it.

Both had great seats - we booked VIP for the normal viewing and the IMAX were all 'VIP' seats. The viewing angle on the IMAX was steep so the people in front were nowhere in your field of view, which wasn't a good on the normal viewing.

I'd prefere to see a dedicated 3D movie in future on the IMAX, otherwise I'd be happy to just watch a standard movie but on the IMAX screen.

I'd give the IMAX 8/10 and the 2D version 5/10

It's funny that you thought that as I thought it was better than episode 8 and more like a traditional star wars movie in the sense of the story - but a whole more grittier and 'real' than any of the other movies before. It made me think that the fantasy world of Star Wars was all of a sudden believable.

The actually image quality wasn't great, not very sharp and poor contrast but that could just be the cinema? It was a main Cinemax. O was sitting there thinking my TV looks better and coupled with my sound base I'm looking forward to getting it on Blu-ray because the trailer I've got looks great.

I agree, the 2D at Vue was pretty poor I thought. That's why I thought the imax was head and shoulders above the regular cinema.
