I have recently shot a Viking Battle re-enactment- yeah weird I know :exit:

I have sold images/Prints and I have been asked by the organisers to supply images on a CD- large enough to fit the maximum on the CD and be printed from the CD to a 10 x 8 print size

My question is: what is the minimum size of the image on CD / obviously to get the most on one disk and retail quality to be printed?

Thanks in advance

Les ;)

Hi Les

How many shots did you take and how many are you "wanting" to get onto the CD - what about working backwards - CD size is... number of images is... gives you an image size of ... ? (hope this makes sense...)

I used to print out 10x8 images from my 300D years ago and I seem to remember these were only 2-3MP in size.

Hope it helps...

Thanks I may well have to do that- I'm not too fussed about how many images or number on CD's really need to know what size in Pixels will
be required to get a decent 10 x 8 print. I have dozens of blanck CD/DVD disks

I shot 50 images and the organisers want all of them, to print themselves ( I have been paid lol)

If you shot 50 images - leave them at max resolution and you should easily get them on 1 CD.

I've had 10x8 from my 300D which was only a few MP.

Man maths here (so no responsibility for being wrong :D ) 50 shots @ say 20MP each = 1 GB, plenty of room on the CD left, so just upload them at the highest they are - saves a lot of messing.

Cheers fella my camera produces images @ 6000 x 4000 pixels

Unless I am out of touch I though a CD could take maximum around 700MB?

It would be fairly normal to resize to the print size at 300 ppi - thus a 10" x 8" would be 3000 x 2400 pixels. Note that the ratio is different to your 6000 x 4000 camera output, so a crop is indicated, and indeed the crop tool in PS is the quick way to proceed since you can enter the data of pixel size and ppi into the provided fields, pull out the crop box and hit enter - done!

Also fairly normal would be jpg 'high' quality and sRGB. That's probably about 5Mb a shot, so a hundred and odd per CD.

I also use JPEG Mini to compress images for DVD's/website galleries. Cant see any reduction in image quality either. Awesome programe.

I tend to give the full size images now as i very rarely get anywhere near the capacity of a DVD.

Just had a quick peek at my Iceland D750 shots, JPEGs SOOC and the biggest is 17.6 MB. A CD can hold about 40 files that size so resized down to 10x8 and 300?pi, you should have no problems getting all 50 on a single CD at maximum quality JPEG.
