I did a shoot today and took images on my mates d200 as I didn`t have a flash. I now have the flashcard and no card reader. Therefore can I put the card in my canon 400d and download them onto the my PC (not using the canon soeftware) and convert the RAW images in Photoshop???

answer a) I would be very surprised if it works!
answer b) try it!

Hmm, good question . I would have thought if you camera can report as a "Mass Storage Device" then it's possible as you camera is effectively acting as a card reader (albeit a very expensive one).

:agree:

Cheers ST that was my thoughts but I`m worried there is more to it and I may loose/corrupt the images

I would be very surprised if it would loose/corrupt data, but understand your concern.

When you have a card with canon images on it and you plug it in how does it appear in "My Computer"?

It shows as a portable device. Then displays make and model of camera.

I`m gonna give it a try

Ok so that answers my question. Canon software triggered before I could stop it and an error message appeared stating there was no images matching the recognised format. Went into the camera file via My computer and it stated that the card was nearlt full. Clicked again and was a file statin ND200. When i clicked on it no images were shown. I also tried to open via CS3 and nothing there again. Although the card still has 1.8 gb of data shown on it. Very strange.

Think I will just buy a cheap card reader

Do you have the right version of raw decoder for the Nikon RAW files? They are completely different to the RAW files from Canon - this may explain why the card is showing as full but you cannot access the files.

You need to stop the Canon software firing up, why would it do that anyway ?

NEF files are just files, they should just transfer from your portable storage device, in this case a Canon camera/CF card.
Use windows to browse to the flashcard, the Canon software is doing the browsing and saying there are no Canon files.
You only need the NEF codec to edit

Just noticed new printer has card slot Duh! In my defence i bought it due to its faxing capabilities not its printing and hadn`t paid much attention.

Stuck card in and sorted. Thanks Folks

just for the future you could try this.

when you can see the folder for the D200 just right click and copy to comp then you might be able to view the files when they are on your comp rather than trying to get the camera to view them.

That's what my 30D is
