It is about time I revamped my self hosted Wordpress blog, it all needs a bit of a restructure really, but the area I'm looking at first is where I'm hosting the photos. Currently it is a mixture of Photoshelter (which I am looking to do away with), Flickr and in the Wordpress media library. I have also been looking at Next Gen gallery plug in.

Essentially I want something that I can easily upload, then find images from to put into posts as either a gallery or single images. Some sort of right click protection and/or watermarking would be nice, but isn't essential. Is Next Gen the right path to take for this, or is there something better that I have missed?

Isn't next gen designed to provide full gallery displays, so to provide full display purposes for lots of photos?
If thats what you want it might be worthwhile lookign at a better template?
With a blog you usually add one or two images and to be honest, right click protection is useless, people will just use snipping tool to grab the image instead..
I use a mix of import from url (photo hosting site) or add to media library, never bigger than 800x600 images, watermarked.

Most posts are one main photo at the top, but I'd like to add a gallery at the bottom of some posts too.

I use NextGen Pro, because I've set up a store for my wedding clients.

If it's just for small galleries at the bottom of posts, then I'd just use the in built wordpress / JetPack gallery tbh. If you want right click protection, then just get a standalone plugin that does that.

Is there a better way of organising the files with them? I've currently got hundreds of pictures in the media browser. I am after something a bit more structured.

Well, NextGen works for that, as you upload a Gallery for each post or whatever. Then you can group Galleries into Albums, I've got my site set up so every time I add a wedding gallery to my wedding album, it automatically updates my Client Area with a link to the new gallery.

You can import to it from your Wordpress Media Browser, but that will duplicate the content.

Thanks, I want to avoid duplication. The Albums > Galleries > Images gives it some structure.

Have a look at WP Media Folder plugin, it may be what you are looking for. I use it on my site and it gives you folders within Wordpress Media Manager. There are various extensions that allow uploading from Lightroom and integration with Nextgen and other galleries (though I havent' tried these)

Those sound interesting, I'll check them out.
