I have recently downloaded this software which is free and tried it on some of my JPEGs taken at high ISO and the effect of noise reduction is fantastic. I tried playing with the sliders etc, but found that the automatic (default) setting of noise reduction works great, and the only thing I have been changing is the Sharpening slider, which goes from -5 to +5. I usually set this to between +3 and +5 and am happy with the result.

My question is, I shoot RAW with my camera, and then use photoshop to convert it to JPEG (I do some sharpening in photoshop too, including sharpening which adds a bit of noise). I am thinking of including noiseware in my normal workflow (if I find that the noise levels are significant after photoshopping). I always save my JPEGs at highest quality in Photoshop, which can be about 6-7MB sometimes. But after running the JPEG thru noiseware, the size seems to shrink to about 1.5MB. I can see that the noise levels have reduced dramatically, and can't see much of an impact on the rest of the image quality, so why is the size of the image reducing so much? Am I losing out on any quality by virtue of the small JPEG size?

I use Imagenomic Noiseware, in PS on a new layer use high pass to sharpen and then put a mask on the layer and fill it black the use the brush and white to selectively sharpen the parts I want sharpened

I think you are talking about using the plugin in Photoshop. I am just using the free version, which is not a Photoshop plugin. This software works on JPEGs, takes in my photoshopped JPEG which is about 6-7MB normally and converts it to a 1.5MB JPEG file. Even though the noise levels in the output 1.5MB JPEG are visibly reduced, I'm slightly concerned by the decrease in file size. Am I losing any image quality as a result of the size reducing? The picture still maintains the same 2592x3872 dimensions though, so am I losing out on anything with respect to the small file size?

Ah yes I was talking about the plug in noiseware pro

is there some in the save settings where you set the quality I wonder, Ill down lad the free version and check it out, just installing it now BRB

Thanks.

Just noticed the reason for the decrease in quality. The dpi on the original is about 240 dpi, but on the image after noise reduction is only 96 dpi. There is a processing degree option, which on the free version is set to Auto. It can't be changed to High/Medium/Low, which are only available in the paid versions. Is this the option that can help to save the image at a higher dpi? i.e. set this to High?

Thanks Dave. I will just use Adobe Camera Raw for noise reduction, as the freeware Noiseware is just reducing the image quality, and I don't really want to spend on the paid versions (Pro and Standard). Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions.

BTW, do you know if there is a thread in here explaining about noise reduction and sharpening using ACR or is it just a question of playing with the sliders until you are happy with the adjustment?

I never sharpen or noise reduction in ACR, for me sharpening is the last thing you do in PP before saving your image
