Before you all say invoice invoice invoice let me explain

Covered an Alan Pardew talk and met the guy himself on Friday for a charity evening

all good, I thought if asked for images I would let regional papers run with a credit, supporting charity and all

Just been passed a regional paper tonight with two of the images taken from the evening (possibly taken from club site or mine)

now where does this go? do I politely tell them to make a nice donation to said charity and be done with it, or submit an invoice then donate it myself (not sure how I go about declaring that)

What would you do

I would invoice and donate if you wish, only way you can know it's been done.

I understand that part

It just I dont feel right charging when it was a charity evening I would have done regardless for free

It's irrelevant whether you were/would have shot for free. The paper are using them for financial gain without your permission, as such an invoice is definately worth posting

If thats the case then what is images used without permission worth?

two pictures on one article, I know its a case of they could be worth anything but what do I look for realistically?

The NUJ 'digital costs' sheet is little more than an idealistic wish list, because, with a very few exceptions, nobody in the current market is going to accept those costs on an invoice, whether specified explicitly or built in.

Now i've just found another picture on there website with my name chopped off

So are you still worried about this, they clearly dont give a hoot about you.

ask for what you think its worth to you.

I've sent an email to him to see what he says, still waiting to hear back

If I don't hear anything back then I will submit an invoice

As its the Newcastle United manager, alot of people would look at the article aswell

Dont forget to get evidence, if on a website then do screen grabs before they can remove it, if in print, keep a copy of the paper.

I did that before emailing

apparently the club chairman told him it was ok to use images

lamest excuse ever

They are going to sort it this later today, will see how it goes

its a new one he has linked to... its worse than before..

You're going to have to explain that to me...

Its the biggest load of tosh i have ever read... digital files to cd should be charged 10 pounds digital files to dvd should be charged 20 pounds ... eh? digital files to customer should be £15 ... ??? thats it.. no if but maybe...

Fair enough, it's the first time I've seen the article.

you must have thought the prices where ok and the article good though.. otherwise you wouldnt have posted it... maybe some do and some dont.. i found it incredible.. you found it helpful.. each to there own :) thats what makes the world go around...

I've got nothing to compare it to so I can't say if the prices are considered ok or not. I only got my first paid job on the weekend so I'm still learning. :)

I know - but it's good comedy reading though!! :D

You ought to go to one of the chapter meetings and hear them discuss this stuff. It's highly amusing!

it had crossed my mind that maybe it was really old document.. you mean they actually say these things out loud? I find it really hard to understand ..its like they dont live in the real world or have no experience of running a freelance photo business.. obviously they must have.,. but it reads like they havent got a clue..

It's more a case of understanding why it's written Tony. As a stand alone document used to justify your pricing to a client it's completely barking in it's analysis.

However, if you take it as part of the bigger picture whereby the NUJ are standing up to the media outlets and lambasting them for the pathetically low prices that they pay for imagery, it makes more sense.

The NUJ meetings may come across like an NUS debate at times (as several white collar unions do), but they are driving in the right direction. Let's face it, in the PJ world they are one of the few bodies that provide massed representation for freelancers who are otherwise stuffed when it comes to negotiation.

It's like the London freelance guide - read it as a reference, but understand what you're reading!

To answer your question though; Yes, stuff like this does get said out loud, but for a reason.

I am afraid I have a problem with unions of any sort in any industry.. totally against them myself..

I'm not a massive fan myself and tend to agree with you, but they do have their uses.
