i'm not so sure that any mode(P,S,A,M or any of the others)will offer an advantage over the other....if thats what you're asking?

Yes paul...use it on any mode...but not when camera is mounted on a tripod

I use mine on all modes though mainly Manual. Switch off on tripod and that is that.

Use it any time when the shutter speed drops below the 1/focal length x crop factor rule.

The only time I ever turn IS off is if I'm tripod mounted


EDIT: Perhaps that should say "if my camera is tripod mounted
